Sounds really good! I wouldn't start it and let it idle like that with the a flat tappet cam until you get do a proper cam break in, or you will be pulling the nice sounding engine apart and replacing the cam.

I agree, that was the extent of it.
I haven't started it again since.

Pricey but nice. Now correct me if I'm wrong but the saginaw pump us our stock pump right? Also are those for shirt or long water pumps?

They come in both short and long pumps. I have a short pump which I believe is stock. I had an 87 corvette a few years back that had a long waterpump.
Yes, I believe the saginaw power steering pump is the stock setup. The one I put on is a summit brand black with chrome cap.

I'm thinking you might want to go to a smaller carb. My 383 with a flat tappit 534/555 lift cam with 11.9 compression ran perfect with a 700 cfm db pumper. 850 is a lot of unneeded carb but tgats just my 2cents

You could be right, I have read similar advice.

I don't want to swap it unless I need to though.

I dont blame you but just so you know it may run good but a carb that is to big robs power upstairs on the big end.

I just realized that it is an 800cfm carb not an 850.
I know its still likely too big but not as big as an 850. LOL.

It is not too big. Popular hot rodding did an article a while back or was it hot rod magazine I cannot remember but anyway you can find it online pretty easily and they kind of blew the whole carb is too big myth away. Your 383 probably needs 700cfm anyway. Having a 100 more isnt going to hurt, you may have less throttle response than a smaller carb but my opinion is that is the only bad thing you would experience in your case.
