So I'm piddling around looking at the parts books again, and I ran up across something I didn't do much research on in the past, and that's the carburetor/air cleaner stuff. WELL.....come to find out that according to the parts book, all the VIN 9 cars were supposed to have the air cleaner washer under the wing nut. Point is, my 85 442 did not come with a washer under the wing nut. Never did. (didn't come with a carb throttle return spring I had to fix myself. POS quality control at GM back then- surprise!)

I get that the likely reason for use, at least on the chrome air cleaners, were to keep from rubbing the chrome off and rusting around the air cleaner top center. I think. Makes sense. They were apparently used on the diesel and 4.3 cars, too. Doesn't show it for Y cars. Hmm. Did not seem to be used on Chevy engines either for whatever reason. At least the info I have.

Interestingly, the 84 H/O does not have one, although it's quite understandable that it doesn't because it was almost a basket case when I bought it. My old gray 85 442 I sold didn't have one. Again, maybe the original PO lost it or something. The 87 does have one, weirdly. I've actually never noticed before at car shows. Some had it, some didn't. Figured it was a random thing or maybe 86/87 only. Come to think of it, I don't recall seeing it on very many cars as it is. Thinking back, I think there was one on the gray 87 I had eons ago, but not 100% sure.

I get disappointed in the fact that I know my 85 has never been goofed with and then I'm finding out my car has missing sh*t for it from the factory. Lessee, off the top of my head, no air cleaner washer, no throttle return spring, no limited slip additive, or not enough, missing crimp clamp for A.I.R. hose on driver side, no speedo drive gear hold down retainer/bolt, and what else, oh yeah, missing the nut on the water outlet stud for one of the cruise control actuator bracket. Front hood adjusters not locked, paint quality is, well, 80s GM crap. Not horrible but still. Paint tape lines aren't straight (common) and probably some other crap too that I'm forgetting. GM in the 80s sucked with QC. On just about everything.

No big thing. Just figured I'd throw it out there.

I guess that would mean if you were ever to show it in a concourse show you would have to remove the throttle return spring, the cruise bracket nut, the speedo cable bolt ect. for it to be factory correct. Remember correct isn't always original but original is always correct.

My 86 SS had a stripped bolt on the left radiator support to fender nut down low. Bolt went in about 1/2 way on an angle, then there was a hole above it drilled with coarse thread self tapper. The screw was a match to the ones they use to hold the factory fuel lines to the chassis. With original paint, I'm pretty sure this was GM quality control at it's zenith. Keep that line moving boys.

I'll take the newer stuff any day as far as quality. This is coming from a guy who has owned GM and Ford stuff for 30 years.
I have had several newer Grand Ams with over 300k miles on them (still have an 05 GT)
Several Chevrolet Berettas with 200k plus as well as several trucks with 200k.
But the 70's and 80's were a very bad time for GM. I have a friend who retired from GM when Saturn shut down the Springhill assembly. I heard plenty of assembly line stories.

Just going by what the parts book shows. I went out and took off the one on the 87. It's not really just rubber, it seems more like a rubber coated hard plastic washer or some sort of sh*t. Has a small groove around the outside of it. It's not very flexible. The rubber inner part around the stud needed to be threaded off. It's not a slide on/off dealio. You can pull it straight off, but it's tight. Here's some pics.

Here's the bottom of it. Some sort of casting number. That's about it.

I own nothing but GM. Owned a Dodge and a Ford truck for a very short time many many moons ago. Enough to know better now. :)

I still don't remember seeing that even the cars I would prep before delivery. It wouldn't surprise me that it was tossed after a tune up or the line workers at the plant randomly put them on.
