From what i understand, cars 20 years and older dont need emissions. Im in Pa and just took my 1978 lemans to get state insp. I have no emissions stuff on my car. He put state insp sticker on car w no no emissions sticker. He said shops dont have the sniff tester anymore so they dont need emissions.

Since you're in a emission county did they even bother to look for emission equiptment?

Probally not. I live right outside Philly. I talked to 5 different shops and a dealership in different areas.

I'm in a non emission county but everyone I've talked to says I need what was on the car to pass the visual that was added to our inspections over ten years ago. Never said it all has to work but needs to be there.

Okay then, does the cat have to physically look like what the car came with or can it be just a generic specimen from a speed shop or a corpse from a salvage yard? I used to run D-100 p/u cats on my old 78. Totally burnt out and no recycle value to them but it satisfied the legal beagles. Blew at least one of them off when it clogged up solid and the motor retaliated. STill have that motor; car is long gone and turned into a toyota that has probably been recycled now as well. Don't know what they turned it into. LOL. Oh, and does the cat's attachment have to be a solid connection like a weld or can it be a couple of muffler clamps or a pair of Vibrant sleeve clamps or similar? Asking this because, once the visual is done and you have escaped, you are likely going to want to dispose of that catalytic nuisance; just don't throw it out. Keep the insert stashed for the next time the inspectors come a-snooping.

Stock cat converter for a 305 would be either 4 bolt flange / clamp on fitting for non HO or dual 4 bolt flanges for HO versions. Both have Air tubes going to the smog pump system.

Don't know about PA, but in NJ they drive cars over floor mounted video cameras to inspect the exhaust.
