Hey all, I am having a windshield installed Monday, a local glass guy is coming to my place to do it. I decided to pull the windshield myself since Im kind of at a stand still till i get the windshield in. Plus i don’t mind the experience.

Well i have the urethane scraped off and I found some rust, I know this is not ideal but I have the rust spots wire wheeled down to bare metal and it cleaned up nicely. Usually i like to wire wheel my rust and then hit with a self etching can primer or a rusty metal primer. I have been watching videos where they’ll use a brush on type primer in a small container. I’m not familiar with this product and it’s not clear to me when or how to use it. My question is should I move forward with hitting the bare metal with some of my typical primer, or wait for the glass guy to use his product directly on the bare metal? My thought is my primer will be fine since the existing urethane is laid over paint anyway. Then if he wants to use his product on top of the primed metal it'll be fine. Thoughts?

Epoxy primer.

Glass primer is not really meant to protect bare metal.

That primer they are using is for the urethane used to install the glass. It's a different animal than what you want to use on those spot repairs.

Could you suggest a product? Hopefully something locally sourced
I have the fortune to be in the collision trade, so my go-tos are not something most people are going to want to buy.

That said, it really needs to be a 2 part, catalyzed product. Etch primer needs a fair amount of time to expel the acids, so I am not a fan of it.

My opinions...other people will likely have other opinions.

Ok I see a 2k epoxy primer in an aerosol. Is it really 2k??? Would 1k suffice?

Looks like I *might* be able to get either a 1k or a 2k in an aerosol if i drive to town. Will have to call in the AM. If only available in a can, maybe I’ll brush on.

Okay it doesnt appear that i can get anything locally. Napa had a “2k aero primer” but I called and it wasnt epoxy.

I dont want to make a mountain out of a mole hill but the guy is coming monday. It was difficult to find someone to do the glass. What are my next best options? I am thinking self etch athough i know it is not preferred

epoxy is killer but given your situation(time frame etc)an etch primer is the next best thing-in my opnion.

Thanks melloelky I think that's what I'll do then.
