i recently bought a few relays on eBay (60amp relay with 12gauge socket) over kill for what I'm using it for which is what i like to do in this case. I'm not sure what kind of garbage it being made now but its just terrible. the issues I'm having is on, my LS conversion i did for my fuel pump is getting so hot that its melting socket housing and making the socket come lose from the replay. the relay looks to be fine at this point but its annoying to have this kind of failure. what have you been using and how is the quality of the sockets and relay?

go to the pick n pull and get relays

from GM cars/truck.

I would very careful about any cheapo, non brand name (OEM) relays you can buy in bulk (pack of 5 with wiring for $20) on the web. Many of them are very unreliable imho.

You can never go wrong with genuine Delphi, Bosch, etc that are going to cost a little more, (or clipped from junk yard) and are higher quality. Most modern cars don't use too many of those bracket mounted relays much anymore and have all but moved to PDM's and Weathertight Fuse and Relay Panels with the smaller, rectangular relays.

There are some really nice "modern" solid state relays available out there now (not cheap though) as well depending on what your needs are. For a simple Fuel Pump Relay, or Electric Fans I really like the Racetronix Relay/Fuse and harness kit which for the $50 is a great deal by the time you buy the OEM quality wire, loom, relay, fuse holder, etc. it's likely worth it,

I used these when doing my electric fan setup, seem to be pretty decent so far

that's the junk i have now, just with 12g wires. the sockets are trash. the racetronix looks interesting that 383 stealth posted i might look into that more.

Crown Vics have a 70 amp relay with their own socket. I grab them every time I walk by a Vic at the U Pull It.

You got Right idea... Once a year or so, I'd make a trip to the U-Pull-It... And grab relays and others oddball type stuff. Relays were typically like five bucks a piece, and a lot of times they wouldn't even charge me.

With the one yard I used to go to, I was in there like every week, if I had a few relays that I pulled, they just let them pass through.

well i took apart the melted socket and to be honest i don't think its the plastic they use. the spade connector on the 12g wire on the socket is so cheap and thin i feel that is heating up and causing the problems. non the less its temporally fixed till a quality one comes in the mail.
