I did a relatively inexpensive build on my 7.5, 26 spline axle a few years ago. Gutted my case and installed an Auburn Gear 3.73 ring & pinion, Auburn stage 2 limited slip carrier and a bearing kit for about $700. I'm sure everything has gone up in price, but including junkyard axle cores.

Check for a vacuum leak. If you don't have a gauge, remove the air cleaner and put your hand over the carburetor, sealing it. If it stalls, you're good. If the idle comes down, you have a leak. You can also try spraying around the carb and hoses with carb cleaner to find it

Long tube headers are available that fit gbodys with several different engine types. Not sure what engine you have...but I put a set of Hedman long tube headers specifically designed for gbodys on my olds 350 that have no fitment issues.
