i ran into the same thing when i changed my uppers.i never considered the springs were an issue but i can see taking them and the shocks out of the equation would let the diff float.
I know it's a small thing but it did make a big difference, I put a whip hose in place where the gauge originally went behind my box.it's not full pressure by default but it's enough to blow my area off and that's a big one for me.

so i was in in a similar position with my last 3 motors(3,reallly!) and I'm running this Hella pump along side of a can it's pulls well.just an FYI those larger pumps like summit branded/cvr are quite loud,they're air brush compressor loud.if i can recommend anything it would be to look at this...
