I have found that the switch on the back of the control unit that has all the vacuum hoses to it looses its seal causing the air to revert to defrost. Replaced it on several older GM vehicles to solve the problem.

CW said it right, and plastic is what you will get from most of the aftermarket wheel shops. I have installed the plastic on many vehicles in the past with out any issues.
