Greetings; May of 1995, I install this dream engine. It's already broken in, an hour or more on the dyno. I run the cycle again anyway 20 minutes @1500 to 2500 RPM. Cool down, check this and that, pull the dip stick and I remember putting oil in but now I have chocolate malt and in stead of 5 quarts I’ve got 7 quarts. This is real bad! If it was cheep & easy to go fast, everybody would! Well we know it’s not the block because the problem didn’t exist before the AFR heads. Worse yet my machinist says the new moly rings are etched along with the bearings from the anti-freeze. And it will be an oil burner if I don’t re hone and come back with new rings. Of course bearings too and some labor. The heads are on their way back to the left coast (AFR).So my buddy and I pony up and buy the machinist a booster tool. Then I get a invoice for tightening my loose booster, I was less happy. A number of weeks later my heads are back. The second fresh (bearings & rings) bottom end is ready. The down side is the cylinder to wall clearance is out to .0065”+, loose as a goose. I fire this thing up, but this time I have distilled – de mineralized water in the cooling system, just in case. Five minutes later I’ve got the beginning of chocolate malt again! The goddess of hot Roding is testing me. My machinist doesn’t have a pressure tester. Again my buddy (he has an engine in progress) and I step up and we purchase the machinist a pressure tester. I personally use the new pressure tester on the AFR heads! And sure enough, porosity in both heads in the same place. The area near the oil drains back holes in the end of the heads. Too say I was pissed would be an understatement! Another call to AFR, this time I get Rick the son, pa had retired. I did my best to hold my temper and Rick worked things out. But by now summer is gone; He personally will make me a new set of heads and covered the some of the costs (rings & bearings- gaskets). Because of the way Rick handled the problem, I would buy their stuff again. So I went off the deep end and purchased a set of Eagle H beam rods and the Calies crank. Re balanced the reciprocating assemble, drilling material from the new Calies crank. The two end throws are gun drilled with those light JE pistons & the short taper wall pins, I ended up with a very light assembly. Over winter I sent the JE pistons in and had the crowns ceramic coated & dry film lube coating applied to the skirts. New heads arrive; I've already assembled the short block. I don't trust AFR so we pressure check the new heads! They are OK, so at this point the combustion chambers are NOT matched to the cylinders or any of the ports matched. The machinist says to me “I never want to see another pair of AFR heads in my shop”. The cash shows up from Rick, he had offered me another set of heads free in stead of the cash, but I needed the cash to pay the remaining invoice balance. Off to the machinist to pay the balance, I get invoiced for pressure checking my heads and I did ½ the work. I did mention the free heads, pay my balance & tip him a $100. The next thing I hear is “get out of my shop & don't come back”. Anyway my luck changed and I fired it early the spring of 96. Using Mobil 1 15-50, runs great, I'm worried about breaking the 7-1/2” rear now. Bob Jr.
