With the studs that I bought, they were construction grade pine or spruce so soft wood and able to accept a screw without splitting. You could probably air nail them as an alternative.

We built ours from various crate & pallets scraps I've accumulated over time. I'll be buying additional wood this Spring to 're-build' the current ones & extend the length on them (thus doubling the qty).

How about hickory instead a pine ok you caint get hickory every where some Lincoln log milling an recessed long bolt and washer pinch plate secureing through overlap a canted instep ontop frnt. ?

Hickory, being, I think, a hardwood, would mean that you would have to predrill any holes that you would need to assemble the rails and crossties together. it would be stronger and able to take more abuse but where a softwood might bend or deflect, a hardwood would tend to have less "spring" or flexibility. By way of example, after a vicious storm with high winds, what do you see on the ground mostly, hardwoods or softwoods; true that it will be both but which comes down more often?
