We drilled pilot holes for the stands we made.

With the studs that I bought, they were construction grade pine or spruce so soft wood and able to accept a screw without splitting. You could probably air nail them as an alternative.

We built ours from various crate & pallets scraps I've accumulated over time. I'll be buying additional wood this Spring to 're-build' the current ones & extend the length on them (thus doubling the qty).
