I use a deep drop base with a 3" air filter and that barely clears the hood. I used the washable filters before but I don't like having to wash them and re oil them. I use the Amsoil air filters which only need to be cleaned with a bit of air pressure. The Amsoil filters are alot more expensive though.

I have a vortec edelbrock air gap intake, 1" adapter for the quadrajet and a 1/2" o ring air cleaner spacer. My base has a drop of 1 1/2". Here is a picture of a stock base and it's pretty deep and stock it was a 2" filter so there isn't much room especially if you still have the isolation matt on the hood.

Believe it or not, I've never heard of the amsoil filter, Pontiac gp. Are they as good as the xtreme filters ?

I know before i got my cowl hood. With the highrise intake i had no spacer i could fit a 14x3 but it just barley grazzed the hood as in the breather stud left a dent in my hood the first time i romped it. When i put on my half inch phenolic spacer i had to drop down to a 14x2 filter. But i didnt have a dropbase breather either it was flush with the top of the carb so your results may vary

You need an offset base to clear the large cap HEI. But a 3" filter will fit with a flat offset base. I have a Chevy 350 in my 80 Cutlass with an Edelbrock Performer EPS intake(taller than stock) and use an Edelbrock Signature series air cleaner assembly with a 3" filter and it has a flat base.
Some offset, drop bases have too much offset and won't clear the water neck.

so i bought a drop base and that fits on the carb
now just waiting for the filter and top

I didn't use an offset drop base, it was very close the the hei but it fit. I now have the MSD 8551 distributor so there is lots of room
