looks better with those rims for sure. I have the same ones on my cutlass, but somebody painted them black. I would go for the 350. I think you could get one as cheap as a 305 anyways.
Little bit of an update guys I haven't gotten a chance to pull the engine out of the car yet due to working so much. But I've gotta some awesome news since this. Because we want to go with solid motor mounts on our race car as soon as we swap them on to the car then I get the frame pads and motor mounts off of it which is for a monte carlo. Sweet! I like free. But it gets even better. We also ordered a set of RHS 210cc Aluminum heads for the race car so I also get the old heads off of it. World Products heads! Say whaaaa! 1,300 dollar heads that haven't even been fired yet for free?
So I'm pretty happy about that. Now I'm at a crossroads. I've got a chevy 350 4 bolt main block in my garage that I would like to build up and drop in to my cutty. But I don't have the money right now to get that done quick and dropped in to my car. But I found a chevy 305 and turbo 350 combo complete on CL for 250. Both in good condition. I'm thinking I'm gonna go with that since I could just drop it in my car and go, then really take my time and build up the block in my garage.
Now I know alot of people are against 305's but when I used to own a ford with a 351M/400 everybody said those engines were boat anchors. Well needless to say I found a set of small CC Aussie Cleveland heads for it threw in a different cam and timing set swap a 4 barrel intake and headers on it. And man did she move!!
Now if I get that 305 I was thinking putting a tid bit of cash in it. Cause most parts I throw on it I can swap over to the 350. Now I've done alot of research on my heads I've got with them on a 305. They flow 238cfm at .500 lift which would be equal to 290cfm on a 383 stroker. So these heads would do well on a 305. Now I've also got an edelbrock 650cfm carb sitting around that I would throw on then I would get headers, roller rockers, and a adjustable timing set. In your opinion do you guys believe that would make a respectable street car powerwise? If my math is right that should put me in the 300-325 RWHP range which should drop me in to the low 13's high 12's I believe. Now one consern I do have with these heads is compression. If I run a thinner head gasket do you think I'd be ok? I really don't want to mill these heads down or get new pistons.
Well I've got an update for you guys. Tomorrow I will be picking up a 1969 chevy 350 4 bolt main. I've ran all the casting codes and vin id's on the engine. It is a true 1969 engine. Stock it's 300 horsepower and 380 ft. tq. Now here's the kicker for you guys. This engine stock is 10 to 1 compression with 76cc heads. I'm dropping my World heads on it so it will be 67cc heads with 2.02/1.60 vavles on it which will bump it to around between 10.5 to 10.7 to 1. I've also got an extra HEI dizzy and edelbrock carb sitting in the garage.
Now I've got an even better kicker for you. My extra 350 block in the garage has a stock steel crank so I'm going to mic the crank to check if it's been grinded .10 .10. I will be dropping that in the engine, then I will be putting on roller rockers and my extra performer RPM intake on it. It should be around 375 to 400 horse when I'm done. If it truely lays that down at the rear wheels and I bump my rear gear up to 3.73 it should be around a 12 second street car.
I'm going to go through the engine and replace all the gaskets, rear main seal, oil pump, and timing chain just for insurance. I will have pictures up for you tomorrow. Now a question for you guys. What color should I go with on the block? I don't mind the chevy orange but I'm open to other colors. What colors would you guys choose?
So yesterday I spent time working on the car I got the transmission pulled and I think I found out why the transmission failed. Both transmission cooler lines are pinched and I think it caused a restriction and made it overheat. So that's on my to buy list. But I came out pretty easy. Some of the stuff I took off I just cut off since it's going to the junkyard.
But I went and looked at the 1969 engine tonight. It looked good in the pictures but in person it was a P.O.S. rust in the cylinders and such barely would turn over. So I went home and found another engine by me. It was a 1971 Chevy 350 out of a El Camino. I went and looked at it, originally it was a long block for 300 but I also got a FACTORY aluminum intake, HEI Distributor, a rebuilt quadrajet, and a starter thrown in for 350! I got a heck of a deal. Now in the pictures the engine looks like crap cause it's dirty but the inside is very clean.
Turned over nice and easy! Ripped it down to the short block in under an hour it came apart soooo nice. I'm gonna clean the heads up and probably sell them maybe keep them I don't know yet. But he also has a TH350 for sale which I need one and I don't get paid till friday but he told me since I bought the engine and was serious about the transmission he'd let it go for 125 with the torque coverter! The transmission looks brand new. Normally I'd be skeptical when buying a transmission about it being good but if you saw how the guy took care of his stuff and how he had it all sealed up and in a nice dry place. I'm not worried I got a good feeling.
So here's my order list for Friday. Headers, full gasket set, oil pump (piece of mind), timing chain, and possibly a cam and lifter set. Still waiting on what color you guys think I should paint the block. This is my very happy update
Well last thursday I got the engine out of the cutlass and I pressure washed and cleaned everything I love the rust free frame 8) . But I got some awesome news for you guys....
MY ENGINE IS FINSHED!!!!!!
I spent the past week putting in about 20 hours or so building it to make sure everything is perfect. But as people say it's worthless with out pictures
Finshed!
I really like how the color turned out and I like how I painted my intake black. What's your guys take on it?
hell ya dude! nice build thread.
