Re: Need help with 1968 Sears tractor project-

I opened up my shed today and saw this tractor and actually forgot I had it, lol. I had to scrap the mower deck a few months ago as the aluminum deck had a huge crack in it, and it was taking up too much space. If it was steel, I would have probably kept it and welded it back together. Anyways I never did mess with this thing enough to get it running and now that spring is right around the corner, I'm looking to get working on it. Anyways, just thought I'd update you guys on this.

Just be warned if you go too far with the fix'n it up then you can't use them. Ask me how I know. The JD is a 1963, the first year they built one. The cub cadet is a hybrid of two tractors and a home made hydraulic dump bed. Its been decaled since I took the photos.

I plan to do nothing cosmetically with the tractor. I like the patina and I plan on using this tractor to plow my field.

Re: Need help with 1968 Sears tractor project-

I worked on the tractor today. If anyone following this remembers, this is a mechanical restoration only. This is gonna to be a pulling/plowing tractor, so I want it to be very mechanically sound/reliable, but looks don't matter one bit. I have it to the point where it cranks when the battery is connected on both terminals (PO bypassed the ignition switch) but it won't turn over. I know it has spark. I took the carb apart to and cleaned it, but everything inside looked fine. I'm not sure if it a fuel problem or timing problem. Anyone know anything about this?

Re: Need help with 1968 Sears tractor project-

It should have the same Kohler as my cub Cadet. The starter/generator is the same. They are usually pretty simple. Just to clarify does the starter/gen turn the engine over at all? If you have fire and gas it should start right up. The timing would not be off unless someone has been inside the engine and gotten the cam timing off or the point gap way off. These single cylinder engines can have spark with the plug out in open air and not have strong enough spark to run. Make sure it has a condenser wired in with the points too, it may run without that but not very well.

Re: Need help with 1968 Sears tractor project-

It's been a while since I've done any research on this tractor but I know it has a Tecumseh HH100 engine and a magneto. The starter generator does crank just fine. The spark plug has strong spark and I even sprayed a shot of starting fluid in the spark plug hole, put the spark plug back in and cranked it, and it did ignite. So I can rule out the starter generator and the magneto and spark plug. I'm down to the carb. I am gonna get a new fuel line for it and I'll clean out the tank. I'm gonna try and track down a carburetor.

Re: Need help with 1968 Sears tractor project-

I've had a couple of them also. I had one doing the exact same thing. Ended up being a blown head gasket. They are prone for blown head gaskets. They are great running engines. The carb may just be stopped up from sitting with dead gas. Take It apart and clean and blow out the jets and passages. They are pretty simple.

Re: Need help with 1968 Sears tractor project-

I don't know much about tractors, but I do know a thing or 2 about tecumsehs. If the carbs are anything like the horizontal shaft ones, they get clogged up stupid easily. Did you ever drop the bowl on the carb? It's more than likely going to be filled with a ton of junk, along with the main jet being completely clogged. Floats like to get stuck too. Mine had the same symptoms yours has, if you have a steel tank, it's usually a lot worse. Also, if it doesn't have one already, install an inline filter. Give this a quick look, usually what the main jets I pulled out after sitting look likehttp://www.williammaloney.com/Misc/TecumsehSnowblowerLawnmowerHighSpeedJet.htm.

Re: Need help with 1968 Sears tractor project-

It is a horizontal shaft carb. I could see inside the shaft and it looked clean, but I can't get the bowl off. I'm not sure if the seal around it is just really sticky or if there is something else holding it. I'm assuming the float(s) is probably stuck and it's gummed up inside the bowl. It does have a steel tank too. It's just acting like its flooding before it can turn over.
