Hello guys,
Greetings from India. This is my first post on forum and thankyou for making me part of this forum.
Ok coming onto project. Ever since I was in college I developed a special place for old school car. India in intial days had almost a lot number of old cars say from muscle cars like mustang, to station wagon etc etc but as the technology grew here and lack of knowledge to people about such beauties almost all the old gen vehicles were scrapped out. I always hunted for a good old school vehicle for almost 5 years now, but to my badluck found none or if so owner was not willing to sell any. So one fine day I came across this. 78 cutlass supreme., lying outside a workshop. I quickly ran and started inspecting it. Honestly till that time I was not even aware that its a 78 cutlass supreme. Immediatly checked it. Well the car was in bad shape rusted in out missing interior well most of it. Missing gearbox. Pics tell for the condition. Now if my research is right there are/will be only 2-3 cutlass supreme in whole country. Talked to owner A guy with partial knowledge not even knowning the name of car asked a good amount for it. Good means over the line.
Now the dilemma is heart says to grab it but the problem is the extra odd price quoted now other problem is even if I get it in justified price range. I have to do a lot of fabrication work. Labour cost here is not a worry also no time issues it will be a slow project but the issue is availability of parts, cost of parts and importing(shipping and custom charges) makes it a difficult thing. Now all I want it to be as original as possible. No engine swap if original works can get it overhauled if I am able to get. Can use gearbox mix matched if so possible.
Mind says dump the project.

Again It will be only one of its kind in whole country if I am able to pull this so I am more inclined to get this.

Need your guys opinion about project, parts availability cost.
Thanks in advance.

That would be a very difficult project. Parts for those cars are hard to find here in the US. You can buy a nice clean G Body car for $3k- $4k and then could ship it over there.

Welcome to a great site.

WOW ! that car is well beyond saving , sorry to say.

you be much better off , buying complete car from the states and shipping it back to India.

Hey guys thanks for the input. As I said even mind says to drop it but the problem is Indian customs for importing cars is really weird. They come up with some or the other rule that one end up leaving car at customs parking yard. Few rules like it should be RHD, not older than 3 years and was never in sale in india plus have to 200% duty charges. Even if such formalities are cleared one can not grab the vehicle until anodr juicy amount has to be shelled out and good relation with any higher official in dept. All this make process next to impossible.

Now coming onto it. The thing why I was thinking of restoring it as the mechanical work cost and labour costs here are low. Also basic sheet metal fabrication is easier to do here but still availability of parts like tail lights, dashboard, dials etc ) which are necessary for its glory have to be imported. Also importing parts is not that hassle just pay basic custom charges. But importing car is next to impossible. So was in delimma.

Judging by the photos that you've posted, that car is in REALLY rough condition. Even taking into account the low labour rates, the possibility of ever restoring it back to any kind of decent useable operating condition would be EXTREMELY poor, in my opinion. If I were you, I would pass on this vehicle, and continue looking for a vehicle that is in better condition as a starting point for a restoration project.

Rarely rains there right?
Well monsoon starts here around early june and ends around late august or early september. During that time it rains full fledge here in North India.

I understand what you are trying and considering same things 4 months back when I saw this even I discarded plan after discussing with dad. But somehow heart got stuck and I did more and more research about restoring it and convincing myself to grab it. But I was always afraid not to end up buying lemon.

These things are very rare here and finding another is next to impossible so thought to have you guys opinion on it.
They say "little knowledge is a dangerous thing" so the owner knowing its rarity here asked me a whopping (I converted INR to USD to give you guys correct idea) $4500 USD. I could have gone close to such amount if it would have been in working condition. Mind thought if I can grab it for around $700 and heart said till $1500. But that would have been a later story. For now I guess I should drop the plan with a heavy heart.

Yes, that would be best. This is far beyond saving. Sad to say, it will probably be made into tin cans. Even if you could fix the roof, where would you get windows? The windows probably wouldn't even fit anymore. They may be rare, but they are out there. Have you thought about any other type of old car? Malibus are really common over in the Eastern Hemisphere. A lot of them were four doors though, used as taxis. Most had V6 and manual transmission.
