1983 Big Block Monte Slow Build

Nice ~375HP BbC

Would be nice, but it would seem to me to be more of a low 300s hp motor. Borderline irrelevant when the torque eclipses that by 100+. Before this car my only big block experience was in pickup trucks. They really make cars feel a lot lighter.

350-375, I did 300/432 at the tires with a 208/218° 475/500" lift flat tappet cam and 9:1 CR crank should be around 375/525

Was that with peanut port heads? Sadly this one is 8:1 or less. I'd like to get some Vortec heads for a cheap compression bump along with a meager bump in flow. That and a better intake.

I finally made it back out to the car to check fuel pressure and it was bouncing 7-8 at idle and smoothed out in the 5-6 range free revving. So I taped the gauge to the windshield and went for a quick rip. Survey says:

2 is good, right? For some reason it decided to run out of fuel a little later and I was rewarded with a 5070 RPM upshift. Listening back to the video it sounds about right. Fuel pressure held on to about 4000 RPM then fell off very abruptly. So I decided to yank the pump.

That's the part number for a Carter pump that would have come on a late 60s big block fun-mobile like a Chevelle 396SS. The other side does not have the cast in Carter name though.

I saw a NOS pump on eBay for $125 and a not NOS pump for $15. It also appears this part number has been superceded, so my suspicion is that this pump is a fake. I'll roll the dice on a Blow Reilly's pump tomorrow that cross references to this part number and claims to flow 30gph which is plenty. Fingers crossed it's bolt in and go. I'm going to put a proper fitting in and replace the line from the pump to carb as well.

So I got this pump from O'Reilly's today and it took was stamped M4514. I got it installed with a new section of line from the hard line to the pump and pump to carb, car fired right up and died once the bowl was empty. Pretty much killed the battery trying to fire it off again. Dumped gas down the carb a number of times and ZERO fuel pressure. P!ss3d is an understatement. Especially after making 2 trips because of junk parts trying to repair the plug on the camper yesterday. I guess my time is just worthless huh? Gonna try Napa tomorrow. Also went to put the replacement Grant steering wheel adapter on and quickly realized the plastic thingy was destroyed. Dammit, where am I gonna find one of those? Hmm, I bet that 99 Camaro parts car has one. Yes it does, but I need my lock plate puller to swap it over. So I guess I'm in it for another trip to the hangar tomorrow. While I was poking around at that plastic thing though, I heard a clicking so that means the horn relay is working. As the car is devoid of horns, but the connectors are present at the core support, I pulled a pair of JDM tyte yo horns off the shelf that are pretty damn loud and as I recall the sound is fitting for a bigger car. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

M4514 is just a base Chevy 305/350/400, 8 psi, 30 GPH.

M16011 converts to MF0001, Mark IV 454, 7 psi, 40 GPH.

I had lots of problems with O'Reilly's pumps, but on the 3 port units, not on the simple in/out ported units.

NAPA quality usually a little better, but as they say..., You get what you pay for.

If problem persists, check for plugged up sock or line with partial obstruction, or rotted out line sucking air.

I second this logic. I struggled w/this on my 'Bu & sure enough the flex lines @ the back between the tank & frame either showed signs of cracking/splitting or actually were breached.
