There is a TH200-4R for sale locally for $250 out of a 1986 Grand Prix with 86,000 miles. Would this be a good transmission to upgrade later? I plan to get it behind a maybe 450 ft lb sbc 383 and fixing it when it breaks.

Yep

Why not upgrade it before hand?

We'll see how it goes. Just want to get it back on the road and there's already gonna be a lot of money that will go into to replace the floor, frame repair, etc. Been apart since like 2010.

Do what you gotta do. If the fluid's good, and there is very little if any paste in the pan, change the filter, top off the fluid, maybe add a shift kit and off ya go. Above all else, make sure the TV (not kickdown) cable is adjusted properly.

Actually just seeing your signature it says you have an 83 Monte?

If you do you will need a frame extension and the 2004r trans xmemeber also to install this into your car

My 86 GP had the 200 4R in it for alot more miles than 86k before I put changed it for a stick. Never had any issues with it.

Build it before you put that torque behind it. you'll probably just be building it shortly after installation.

that's if i's worth while being rebuilt after it dies. Always cheaper to upgrade a transmission before it blows and destroys alot of parts that you could use

I mean knowing myself I'll probably build it before using. I mainly wanted to make sure its worth buying and upgrading over something with a superior valve body or whatever.

And yep I know i'll need a different crossmember and extension but appreciate the heads up. Will likely fab something as I have a frame I'm repairing to go under it.
