I have a 87' Cutlass with an LG4 305. Anyone know if this motor is a roller cam or flat tappet? I have been told that only the 305's in F bodies were roller in 1987.

My car is a canadian car if that matters, so it came from the factory with no computer controls on the engine.

You MAY have the block that will accomodate the roller cam & lifters, but as GP says, I think only the TPI engines got the roller cams that year.

My timing set is worn out, so I have to make sure I get the right one to replace it. If its just a flat tappet motor, I will throw a stock 350 cam into it to replace to peanut cam with 350,000km on it. I bet the lobes are pretty worn by now and this gutless cutlass needs all the help it can get!

Plus if I am swapping the cam, I might as well throw on the Edelbrock Performer EGR intake I have laying around, and the stainless roller rockers. I have them, might as well use them...

If you take off a valve cover and look through the oil returns with a light you should be able to see if the lifters have the "dogbone" retainers for roller lifters or not, like in these pics of an 87 LG4 4bbl engine from a camaro.
