200-R4 Stall Converter...

Ive heard that you can use a stall converter out of a S-10 pickup and it will be about 1800rpm in stall? is that correct?
 
SO NOBODY KNOWS ANYTHING?
 
Well it looks as if the early 700r4 torque convertors will work with the 2004r. You would need to look for the 27 spline 700r4 as the later ones had 30 splines. I'm think the 27 spline 700r4 will be found in pre '85 vehicles. Then it may make a difference as to wether it was behind a 4 or 6 cylinder as to how much stall it has.
My opinion, stay with a brand new convertor, not used, and if you're looking for anything under 2000 than it ain't worth it.
 
you have to remember that stall actually depends on the power of the engine. so if you have a good motor, the "regular" TC will stall much higher. or you can look for a D5 converter from a GN, they stall around 2400
 
The best factory converters the "D5" stall around 2,200 to 2,400 or at least the ones from the turbo Buicks did and depending on whats in front of them. I think they came in at least 200-4Rs from GN/Ttype/442/MCSS. Many have them rebuilt strengthened and upgraded. Most commonly done as a 2,800 stall. I had a 2,800 and a 3,000 stall done and at the time both cost about $300 using my core. Even the 3,000 was great on the street as the only time you knew that you had a high stall converter was at WOT otherwise it would lock up at cruise or act as a normal converter would at part throttle.

How do you know you have a "D5" converter? I have 2 transmission's both out of separate 87 Monte Super sport's...

How do you know you have a "D5" converter? I have 2 transmission's both out of separate 87 Monte Super sport's...
It easy to tell a D5 its stamped all the way around the conveter stands out real well.
 
Thanks i will check them. I never even thought of checking them to see if they were the "better" ones.. 8)
 
Some say 5 D but its the same converter.
