Have my 84 Hurst in the shop for a trany oil leak. the shop people told me about a tech bulletin about a rework of the pump body GM bulletin # SIL 89-3 (feb) asking for input on the right way to go is the pump readily adivable aftermarket/GM it does appear the leak is on the outside edge of the seal.

Also was sugeated we replace the rear tailshaft bushing as it has some free play

make sure you have the same valve body when the transmission leaves the shop that the transmission had when you took it to the shop. Those valve bodies are sought after items and it wouldn't be the first time one from a normal 200 4r was substituted for the good one

This is a local one man shop and he has a "transmission" guy come in and help with the repairs. WHat do you know about the replacement of the rear tailshaft bushing? Can that be done from the "outside" or does everythin need to come out and replaced from the inside of the case??

only way to do it without taking the transmission apart is using a tool like this....

Also keep in mind that the 2004r naturally have play in the tailshaft. The driveshaft once installed stables it out. My gn trans when driveshaft is removed the tailshaft would almost sit on seal.

Here's a pic of the rebuilt pump on my spare:

If you look on the perimeter of the seal you'll see a black retainer with "fingers" that help retain the seal in the event that pump pressure behind it tries to push it out. That's an upgrade that rebuilders should add. There are other places that leaks can occur too. The bolts have a rubber coated washer behind them that can seep. There is also a square cut O-ring around the outside of the pump that seals it to the case. Honestly, just replacing the 28 year old torque converter seal will probably fix your problem. I wouldn't worry about the tail shaft bushing. Just have the seal replaced since the transmission will be out anyway.

Question on the tool?? Per the bulliten GM changed the case to add a sholder to the seal seat the sholder is in the outside edge. This makes that tool only useful on the older pumps???
