200r4 or 700r4

I thought Khan hit it very well. Both will work fine. The ultra low gear of the 700-R4 is better for a low torque motor and not as good for say a stroker or a big block due to the torque. The second gear spread is less than ideal in a 700-R4 and the overdrive isn't as tall and its more money & work to get a driveshaft cut and get it installed as the 700-R4 never cam in a gbody. The 700-R4 is also a little heavier and less efficient but none of these things have to be a deal breaker. The 200-4R needs the billet forward drum if you have more than 500 foot pounds of torque especially if you are running slicks. I had good luck with the two 200-4Rs that I have had built at http://www.extremeautomatics.com One for behind my GN and the other behind a 509 ci 570 TQ 442. Both worked flawlessly for me. Even their Stage 1 includes the core so they can just ship it to your door and it comes with a 1 year warranty good to 500HP or 10.90 ETs. Q - Will the 2004R fit my application?

A - The 2004R can be installed in almost any GM application using Chevy, Buick, Olds, Pontiac and Caddilac Power plants that use the later Chevy or BOP mounting. The 2004R is an easy swap to replace 2 or 3 speed TH400, TH350, PG, TH200, TH250, yes even the 700R4.

The 2004R shares many of the same mounting points as the transmissions listed. When you install the 2004R the shift linkage, Transmission lines, converter mounting are the same as any other GM transmission. When replacing the TH350, TH200, TH250, 7004R in most cases the driveshaft can be reused. The transmission mount will require the cross member to be moved into the Th400 location and on most all GM intermediates the factory provided the mounting holes for you to move the cross member.

When replacing the TH400 the drive shaft length and yoke will need to be corrected. The cross member mounting area and the other points listed are the same.

The 2004R uses its own fill tube. None of the transmission Dip stick tubes listed will interchange. You must use a dipstick tube that was intended for the 2004R.

Q - Will the 2004R handle the HP of my engine?

A - The 2004R Will handle up to 1000HP in a street and strip application. If your HP level is above 1000HP and you have primarily a drag car that is used very little on the street. You should be looking at the 4L80E.

Q - 2004R or 700R4?

A - I have been asked this question more than any other. Straight answer some will not like. Honestly its not even a fair fight. The 2004R will handle power that far exceeds that of any 700R4 or 4L60 that can be build at any price. 2004R has a better gear ratio spread, better Overdrive ratio, will fit many more applications, Lighter, Stronger I can go on and on. The 700R4 is best left to applications where its the only option such as 4WD or All WD, tow vehicles, Lower HP applications or customers that are more concerned with budget v/s strength and reliability.

Lock Up Converter or Non - Lock up converter

If you are primarily street driving and lower RPM and best fuel economy are a concern then the Lock-up converter is probably for you. The lock-up will remove the additional slippage from the converter at cruise. The Lock-up will loose some WOT efficiency while unlocked.

If you are Limited Street do not take long trips and converter efficiency at WOT or at the track is more important to you then choose a NON-Lock converter. The right Non Lock converter will deliver the best performance and can be driven anywhere. The Non Lock will have additional slippage at part throttle cruise.

Which one did you go with, the stage 1 or 2? I've been shopping around for one to run with my 455. The two companies that seem to come up most often are Extreme Automatics and CK Performance. The money tree hasn't been growing well this year so I'd like to save a few bucks if possible.
 
Yea CK is also excellent. I bought a shift kit from them years ago and had good luck with it. Stage 1 for the GN and the one behind the Caddy was quite a while ago but it would be a Stage 1 plus the billet forward drum option. I put almost 9,000 miles on it behind the Caddy motor.

Going in the next few weeks to have Extreme put a stage 1 in my cutty, with the 8.5 , either 3:73, or 3:42. Going to buy a couple rear ends and make the decision later. I think the best thing about all this is I am only 7 miles from his shop.

Because of the location of the rear mount? I've installed both. Seemed about the same to me. 200 in my Elco and 3 different 700s in my Regal

id go with 200r4 only cause its a factory transmission for a gbody, period.
which one fits your budget better?
which one fits your purpose of use better?
both are great trannys in my opinion....
