200r4 stock stall converter

I always saw a 2400 rating for the D5. Many have said actual was just over 2000 rpm behind the mighty Olds 307 HO. I know the lower stall D9 isn't even as bad as the stock TH350, 1600 vs about 1900 rpm actual for the D9. Behind a hotter 305 or 350, a D5 would be quite nice.

When I bought my used GN, I pulled a D7 out of my 2004R . It was a dog and doubt it even stalled at 1600.
I removed it and installed a higher stalled billet 9X11 .
I thought the D7 was out of a V8 Monte?

the amount of desired stall in question here is such a low amount paired along side a power plant that doesn't/wouldn't even bring much to the table to push the stall.you're not going to notice a difference at the level we're talking about.a Stall converter allows the car to launch in it's torque curve to get off the line much harder than a car that has much less stall-If you have an engine that makes 500 Ft Lbs of torque at say, 4,000 RPM, and you want that car to launch as hard as it can off the line, you'll want a stall converter with about 3,800 to 4,000 RPM of stall.build their torque and power at higher RPM's, you'll understand why a higher stall converter is needed.for the hp/tq rpm ranges(smog era 200hp) we're talking about here it's almost moot.

Perhaps, but put a 2400 stall in a car that has a 1400 stall and it will wake it up at a stoplight. Probably from a deep slumber to REM sleep, but still, you can notice an improvement, even in a stock-ish G-body. Naturally when you start adding power via cam/headers/intake imporovments and gearing, it changes things as you go, but you can still notice a looser converter even if you do nothing else. Again, as I will always preach, build your systems to compliement each other and you will reap the benefits, gain some smiles, and ruin some back tires. And if you do it right, you can still get some decent gas mileage.

I have a 1988 Monte Carlo SS with a stock 200r4 transmission and converter does anyone knows the stock converter stall speed? Thanks
so glad you brought this up. i have a 86' which basically same as 88' which is leftover 87s. few yrs ago my 69k 305 kicked. blown headgasket caught too late. ftom pace bought this gem for $2900 free shipped... https://paceperformance.com/OEM-Rep...Size-Trucks-General-Motors-19432778.html?q=k+

ok so not a HO or anything, peak Tq 2800 i think so its all down low grunt.... its hooked up all stock tq converter , trans & rear posi. i thought perform bettet down low, where i like a good line launch..... NO! below 3k rpm its a slush box, if i smash it hard on a green light, itll launch nice spinning no tire or very little.

if i'm cruisin in 3rd or D @ 45mph / 3kish rpm, its solid & nice.

btw this sposed to be a TBI motor but i got it with a ol' skool qjet, vac advance HEI.

EDIT when had the 305 l69 it was a lot more punchy down low. another thing to note generaly 750 rpm was normal for idle with 305 and you could idle around your yard with that.... i need 1100 rpm to do same. i'm not debunking anyone or whatever, i;m as puzzled as anyone else and would love to learn from those who know better. or at least i present a case of example stuff & things with data/ experience. also i'm owner #2 bought in 03' with 42k orig miles for 6k, so i know my car.

When you say supposed to be a TBI modda I wonder if it has the puny camshaft that is equivalent to what an LG4 came stock. Anyhoo, my cabby has a 200C and read these converters will fit a 200-4r. Anyone know what the advertised stall might be. Don’t know enough to say it’ll stall like a D5, more or less???
