231 V6 to 200+ HP or when swap is not a option

The expensive and probably dissapointing build for a NA 3.8 includes

Weiand 4 barrel manifold
670 CFM holley
13:1 compression, more is better
Ported heads or better yet Champion Aluminum's
Big Postons cam, forget what it is at the moment

I remember seeing that build and the guy was disappointed. Probably the best one ive seen and it didnt make good power. The best 3.8 heads are equal to average SBC heads. Even at 1.5HP/cube which is insane for an NA 3.8 your only making 350HP. Thats equal to a 525HP 350. How many driveable 525 horse 350's are around? Not a ton. Imagine doing that with stock heads and limited parts, 2 bolt mains, little cam availabilities, ect. Its just not easy. Add a turbo and its a wildly different engine.

use the 4.1 qjet and whatever 4 bbl intake you like. there are more than just edelbrocks out there but you need to really look for tham. i have a factory 4.1 intake i'm modifying so it flows air more directly into the ports. the 4 holes can be opened up into 2 elongated holes, removing all material between the primary and secondary bores in the intake. also the secondaries transition into a smaller hole, removing material from this allows the secondaries to flow better. it allows the incoming air/fuel mixture to go from the carb right into the ports whereas before it went down holes in the intake before heading to the ports. others have modified the factory 4.1 intake and it flows pretty well for a modified factory intake.

to see the pics you will need to register but they have a section for n/a buick V6 owners so you can get good advice there for the engine. the only thing i hate about the engine are the heads.

it's not finished but i'd be willing to sell the 4.1 intake and all the stuff that was on it when i pulled it. that includes the throttle cable bracket with bolts, bolts for the Qjet, EGR, thermostat housing, air cleaner assembly, the fitting for the air tube that connects to the brake booster, the bracket that's used to brace the air pump and brace for the alternator bracket. just about everything but the carb and intake bolts are there. intake is painted but being stripped as is the air cleaner, it developed a small rust spot and i decided to repaint it. thermac does work. the EGR is used but doesnt have a lot of miles on it and is in good useable condition. the thermostat housing is ok to use but it's 40 years old, it aint pretty. the intake does need a grommet for the PCV valve. i still have the water temp sending unit for an idiot light and sensor for the computer.

you can also use buick 350 pistons in your engine, slightly better choice of pistons. hedman has headers for the engine on their site. hooker made some but not any more.

i think your best bet would be to use an overdrive transmission and a lower gear like 3.42 or 3.73. 2.41 and a th350 makes for poor performance.

How do they go about inspecting cars there? I'm surprised that it would be a problem on such an old car. It's too bad, I wouldn't have thought that's how it was in Israel.

Is that the original header panel, with the sealed beam headlights? Strange on an '87, unless someone switched it. How did the car get there? Good luck getting more power from the V6. And FYI, you have more friends here in the USA than it might seem sometimes...

If they are that strict that you can't swap engines easily, then they may also be strict about performing any kinds of modifications to the V6 or hot rodding parts. Here in the US it is illegal to disable any part of the low emission systems but is enforced so poorly in some parts of US that people do it anyway.

tnx to every one.

there is no problem to swap. i can do that but for that i need to tonns of paper work.
i live the angine as is but tune the carburator and fix the HI RPM and GPM problems. maybe i will replace the transmission to 5 speed one.
there is no problem with tune up. because they dont see the parts...
TH700 is good for me?

the 2004r would be a bolt in with a few parts from a donor car, the 700r4 not so much. neither would help if you still have a high gear like a 2.41 unless you're doing 90MPH or more.

I believe the 700R4 only comes in the Chevy bolt pattern, so you would need an adapter. 200-4R is what I think you'd want to go with. How much does gasoline cost where you are?

2.3$ per litter
