There is a 1980 3.8 turbo Riviera near me for $200 the listing says that it's the same as a GN motor. You guys know more than I do. Does it really have the same innerds and all? what kind of hp and fuel ratings do they get?

The 1980 motor was identical to the 1980 Regal, and was the 1st generation of g-body Turbos. Carbureted, complicated, and sadly lacking in both performance and mileage. In 1984, when the GN was first introduced, port injection became available, computerization was evolving rapidly, and performance improved substantially to about 200hp. In '86 an intercooler was added, hp was raised to 235  and the rest is history. Unless you really have the urge to fiddle with an inefficient, antiquated system, I'd pass.

It has been a long time since I saw a turbo Riviera, but from what I remember the plumbing runs behind the engine and would not be an exact fit to a G body. The E body had the engine spaced off the firewall in most applications, but the G body has it right up against the firewall. I haven't examined one since about 1995 when I was thinking of swapping the turbo junk onto my old 3.8, so I may be wrong.

3.8 carbed turbos arent that bad. If you build yourself an alky system, do some exhaust work get all false knock reduced there is no reason they cant run as fast as a 84/85 set up. Considering some parts like headers, the intake and computer are as bad as they are, they put out 175hp if you have everything working. Get some performance stuff for it and 225 isnt that tough.

Riv setups dont swap in a G. Turbo is stuck off the back of the engine, vs on top of the intake in a G. I would pick it up. The turbo control center is worth at least 50+, as are some of the other parts. are worth a bit too. Be easy getting your 200 out of it.

Ohh BTW, I got 21 highway MPG with my carbed turbo. This is with new motor, not all the vacuume stuff hooked up, and a leaky carb. Should get 23 ish if I get it running better,

I had an 81 Turbo Trans Am with a 301 V-8 carbrurated

It was good to drive and the turbo was pretty sweet.

Was it a GN or T-Type...... Absolutely not, not even close.

But it was alot of fun watching the turbo power lights, light up inside the hood scoop!!

If I were to get that Rivera for 200.. I would play around with it and see what I could do.

And that engine is not the same as the GN engine!!

not in too bad of shape for what he's askin... wouldn't be a bad daily driver...just too bad thos were front wheel drives.... :?
