Why do I keep breaking shift cables?? am i doing something wrong? Should i scrap the stock shifter or just stay with the stock shifter? I have a steering column lock around the column just to let you know also. I have to use the bottom part of the column to shift the car is there a certain way i have to install the cable to make sure its installed properly? what would make it fail so soon?

Was the car a factory console shift or column? The reason I ask is that if it was converted to console shift, the hole that goes trough the floor might be in the wrong spot and there is too much tension on the cable. Was it hard to pull it into gear when the cable wasn't broken?

are the cables made in china?

the other thing is are you sure it's the right cable...a cable for a 3 speed is not the same length as a cable for a 4 speed

Check your ground straps. They might be missing or loose. There is one that goes from the fire wall to the trans bellhousing to engine bolt. Over the years engines are swapped and these things sometimes are not put back on.

What do ground straps have to do with the shifter cable? :?

I think I know what he means.....if the ground cable isn't installed the shifter cable is acting as the ground and it's overheating the cable causing it to break....

he's wrong of course 8)

I'm thinking he's using a three speed cable when he needs a four speed cable since the three speed cable will fit but it's just a bit too short..

I just think it's cool to see someone besides myself wanting to keep the granny shift lol.
