305 sbc will not accelerate

One way would be to add a degreed timing tape on your vibration damper. Another would be to use an adjustable timing light that enables you to dial in your timing and check for full advance.
There is a simpler way to do this by marking the line, or mark on your damper with chalk or some white paint. Start the car with the timing light connected. Aim the timing light at the timing mark on the timing cover. You'll see it indicated B for before dead center ,0 for TDC,and A for after dead center.

Did you remove the EFE, valve in the exhaust? If you disconnected the vacuum hose to it, then it won't open once the motor is warm and choke the exhaust.

I have it marked with chalk but when I turn the dial it moved the line all over the place. How do I see what my true timing is simple while idling. No that valve is still in there but there is a spring that holds it open right?

Anyone have any other ideas...

When revved in park it will advance the timing. Would a bad module act like this?

It almost sounds like there's a vacuum leak somewhere. I don't think a bad module would act like that. I think it would either not run, or be very erratic, like it's getting ready to fail.

what transmission is he running, does it lack acceleration in reverse as well?

The stock 250 trans...I guess we will spray the intake and everything with brake clean and check for leaks. As someone suggested earlier maybe the muffler or the exhaust valve is plugging it up?

I had a problem like this on a vortec. For me it ended up being the distributor cap. I had a brand new MSD but it must have come warped from the mfr. I switched to an Accel dist cap and the problems stopped immediately. The MSD was cracked across the top when we took it off.

-- and I forgot to mention. It happened right after I switched to dual exhaust with a Y pipe, almost as if the vortec didn't like the added back pressure. If I had stayed single exhaust I suspect the crooked msd cap would have kept functioning forever like that.

Hmmm...he has a complete distributor from a 350 that I think he should drop in and see what happens. Thanks guys
