Doing a 305. swap on my 79 cutlass. Having an issue sourcing the right transmission. What is the best transmission that fits the 305? And any ideas on where I can locate one? Rebuild or new?

Everything fits pretty much - TH350, TH400, 700R4, 200-4R, T56, etc.

Assuming this is a cruiser, if you had a 3 speed in it previously, and you don’t want to get into re-gearing, then stick with a 3 speed and I’d recommend a stockish TH350.

Okay groovy. I live in Texas and I am having issues finding a TH350, any ideas on where to start looking for one?

Here’s one. You search a little and they are pretty much $1000 with a warranty.

I would be looking for an overdrive trans if I am starting from scratch.

Lots of transmission to be had if you invest a little time in your search
Start with your local transmission shops

What motor and trans was in the car previously?

An Olds 307, 350 or 403 is a direct swap. It was probably a TH200, which is weak junk. A TH350, a direct swap or TH2004R with frame extensions, otherwise is a direct swap.
