I have a 1987 Chevy Elcamino street cruiser (not a hot rod). It has 305 with OBD1 ECM and it has a computer controled Quadrajet. Engine has been freshened up. Rebuild heads, all new engine gaskets. Rebuild carb, New mild summit K1102 cam (278/288 duration, .421/.444 lift, 112 lobe separation, dual exhaust (no headers) Upgraded ECM chip with Hypertech #227042, all vacuum lines replaced. I would like a little more low end power and I am thinking about retarding the timing a little bit. I know the ECM takes over as soon as you plug it in and it controls all the advance timing. But I thought if I tried to give it a lower starting point (retard timing) that might help low end torque. I never timed the cam when I put it in, just used the stock marks on the timing chain gears. Anyone ever try this timing trick or have any suggestions. Constructive criticism is welcome, and no I don’t want to put in a 350.

Retarding timing can lower idle quality and help cause Qjet nozzle drip. Base ignition timing affects the throttle opening angle at idle. Too far retarded will cause to have the throttle plates open further which can cause main nozzle drip, especially with hotter than stock cams.

You would want to advance the timing. So if base timing is 5 degrees BTDC set it at 10 to see if it creates a spark knock. If it does, knock it back a couple
