305 to 350 CCC swap

I don't have much to contribute here but am working on a project to design a plug and play replacement for the factory ECM that you can easily tune with free software. However, I don't have a running system and would like to work with someone who does. If interested please private message me.

That is pretty cool, like a modern version of Crane Cams old aftermarket CCC ecm which used trimpots for adjusting the tune. Also it had a dash mount module with a A/F mixture gauge with knobs for controlling the fuel mixture and timing advance.

I have two of these units in its original design that was not sold to the public. The 100 or less that was sold to the public had half of the adjustments removed per the EPA even the remote was diffrent. For late 80's technology it was well advanced and it did work on stock and modifide engines. I did try it on my stock Hurst and made a huge difference and no I did not pick up an extra 200 HP, it was more of a snappy of the line exceleration. I have a freind with a 86 monte ss stock no mods same results I had. Tried it on freinds 85 442 with a built 461, we had put back the stock carb and distributor, cat, exhaust manifolds and all the emissions sh*t and it worked but it took me 3 months to get it back from him he was having fun with it.

Ya this basically what I plan on making but modernized. I wouldn't say that it was "advanced" but it is neat they actually made it. My main thing holding me back on the physical design is making sure the connector is universal across engine models.

I would have to disagree with you that it wasn't "advanced ". Crane cams developed an ECM for GM carburetor V8 cars and were working on one for the Buick GN that had the ability to make changes just like custom mapping you would use on your laptop today. When the EPA caught wind of the original design and its capabilities they told Crane change it or you cant sell it to public. Back in the late 80's into early 90's no one was burning chips , you could buy chip that had a little more timing built in but thats it. Was it advanced technology I would say yes. If your talking about the connector that plugs into the ECM there all the same if my memory is correct, getting old.

I guess we sort of have to agree to disagree on what advanced technology means? We can both agree it was really cool and forward-thinking though!

Thanks that actually really helps. If I know all signals were in the same positions on the ECM connector, I can easily make it work with all CCC cars. The fact that Crane made their system seems to agree with that as well.
 
I have one of the Crane ECMs too, but have not tried it out yet. It was a early attempt at computer hotrodding at a time when most people did not even own a laptop. Plus it allowed people who did not know how to program software (which was very common back then) to tune their ECM. Even today, the EPA considers reflashing a modern OBD2 PCM as illegal tampering. It is why with the modern Erod LS crate engines, you are not supposed to alter their computer tune. You can program the trans controller but not the engine computer in the Erod kit.

OK, progress update here on my 86 LS project. Since I started this thread I have purchased an Eagle Specialties rotating assembly for my 355 with Mahle forged pistons and Eagle's balanced crankshaft and connecting rods etc. I now have a new set of AFR L98 aluminum CNC ported cylinder heads, Howards Cams #181145-12 hydraulic roller camshaft with Competition Cams #875-16 reduced travel hydraulic roller lifters with an AFR stud girdle and Scorpion 1.5 ratio roller rocker arms, Edelbrock 3701 intake manifold and CCC quadrajet and CCC distributor. I have purchased a couple of 1987 1228079 ECM's and a modified ZZ4 Eprom from a gentlemen I met on another site that was suggested by one of the fine members here on this site (thank you again sir). I'm looking at buying aftermarket headers and installing A.I.R. tubes them for my combination. I'm still planning on having air condition and all the emissions on this project. I have purchased a 2300-2500 rpm stall converter for my 200-4r transmission that I have modified and built myself for this project. I plan on running somewhere in the 3.42 to 3.55 gear ratio in the rear end when I decide what rear end I'm going to install. Got suspension work I want to do also along with refurbishing replacing the old interior parts with new. I haven't been here in a while because of my late year work schedule and holidays and have missed communicating with all of the really nice people here.
Please feel free to comment or ask about my project. I'll be ready about other members projects also.
