i am in the process of turning my 307 to its more powerful counterpart and i wanted to start with a vin 9 camshaft. now i wanted to know that when i pull my cam out will the lifters fall into the engine if i dont take them out first. i was just gonna remove the timing cover and pull the Y out and insert the 9 in.

Which Vin 9 cam are you using? Which Vin Y 307 do you have? If it's the original 307 for the '86, then you have the roller cam in there. You'll need to replace it with the Vin 9 roller cam and not the earlier flat tappet cam.
You also can't swap older cam/lifters into the later block due to the fact that the later roller engines had a larger diameter lifter.

To be honest, your not going to see a huge improvement in performance doing the cam swap. Maybe 30HP if your lucky. The stock roller 307 Vin Y engine was rated at 140hp, the Vin 9 roller was rated at 170HP.

It'd be smarter to find a 350 Olds and drop it in place of the 307.

And yes, you'll have to pull the lifters. That's the point in removing the intake, so that you can pull the pushrods and lifters out of the engine.

or a 403. Swapping Cam you need to remove the intake and remove the lifters.

I was curious how he was getting the cam out with the lifters/pushrods in place.

yeah i know it would be more efficient to swap in a olds 350 but budget wont permit that now lol as a high school kid with no job im on a tight one. an engine swap is down the road when i can build it right. and yes i am using the roller cam also would you get headrs for the 307? i know they will be able so go on the 350 later but are they worth the investment?

the question is are headers legal?

Yeah, around here they are. Dayton doesn't have any emissions testing any longer.

Or at least, no one is going to check to find the "illegal" headers on the car.

if the OP is in Ohio, he needs to go to Akron and buy that $50. short block off of Beeter! I can not believe he still has that thing.

FE3X your in dayton? you have probably seen my car. but the real question headers on a 307 yes or no? what kinda shortblock is it? does it have any extras?
