"I'm buying a house"
"Been trying to selling this June"
"1970 short block, possible bad rod bearing, no harmonic balancer"
"It has something up with the bottom end.. dont know if its a rod bearing.. but its just a shortblock.. shallow dished pistons.. i have no idea what the bottom end is like.. i just need it gone.. $50 and its yours lol"
"SO $50.. ill even load it!"

$50. you can almost get that in scrap metal ... if Ohio didn't have 2 states in my way ... (and well if I had a place to store it)

i am in the process of turning my 307 to its more powerful counterpart and i wanted to start with a vin 9 camshaft.
Sorry but your wasting your time, the VIN 9 motor had about 30 more horsepower and with the price of the cam you could just buy a running 350 or 403. Here is more information on what is needed:

If you wanted to seriously build a 307 to get performace close to a 403 or 350 you will need about $5k-$10k

http://78-88olds.com/forum/showthread.php?t=70

350's and 403's cost the same as swapping in a 455 and just about all your 307 stuff will bolt up to it (motor mounts, accesories, etc.)
Here is my cheap budget swap:

My 455 swap all said and done was around $600 and that included Aluminum intake, running motor and your basic fluids and such.
All it takes is patience and a little shopping around, don't rush things and thoughouly educate your self about the workings of a motor and sounds like you need to take a class at your local collage or at least watch Power Block a little...

You can't just slap in a cam either, the VIN 9 motor had different valve springs for the cam as well as a different harmonic balancer.
Save your clams, stop thinking about the 307 and read up on motors a little.

Take it from a fellow High school student. Save your $ and drive the slow 307 for now.
I have a 403 on the engine stand, 9k mile rebuild #5 heads, performer intake, th350 trans (probably needs a rebuild), dual exhaust and headers and I have $250 for the 403, Paid $125 for all the other stuff, bolted to a 68 350. I sold the short block for $100 so I technically paid $25 for everything else. Oh and $75 of the $250 for the 403 was in the form of bbo heads I got for free and partially traded towards the 403.
So I have an actual $200 tied up in this as of right now. Need a cam and gaskets (~$200) to put the 403 together, and will probably rebuild the trans ($400).
Then all I need is a better rear gear ratio, see them from time to time for $150-$300. So, I should have a total of $1100 in the whole drivetrain.
I'm copying a build that put a car 200 lbs heavier at 13.6, so I SHOULD be running 13.4 with this setup. My goal is for a 13.99... Not bad for $1100 total.
If you can find a good running motor and trans you can just drop in and go for a lot less than that. I regret pulling the 350 apart, I should have just dropped it in. But hindsight is 20/20.
