Hello out there,

I am a new greenhorn to your site and joined due to a question regarding installing a chevy 350 in my '80 Lemans wagon.
The lemans has a tired 301 Pontiac in it now which my initial plan was to install a '71 Pontiac 400 4 barrel out my '71 Grand Prix I thought of parting out. Just a small history, I always liked the '78-83 G-body wagons. My parents had a '81 Malibu wagon they bought new (traded our '70 Chevelle sedan in for it @ Good Chevrolet in Renton WA)with the gutless 267 though was reliable. After High school in '91, I drove it through college until the transmission went out and like an idiot I drove it to the bone yard (this happend in 1993). I purchased a '79 Malibu wagon a few years ago with a 305 and enjoyed it and am never suprised on how much they can store. I sold it to by a 1993 Chevy K1500 extended cab for towing though missed my wagon. I always liked Pontiacs version of the G-body wagon with a more plush interior and styling. For a while I looked on this website and all over the country for a decent Le mans wagon with no luck. Then luck did hit when I found my current Lemans through a contact who bought it for demolition derby last December, locally. I rescued the Le mans and last time it was driven was 1997 due to blown radiator hose. Anyhow any tips for the conversion would be great, thanks.

If you pass on the 400, don't overlook the Pontiac 350.

Most people jump right to the 400 so Pontiac 350s are cheap. A P350 will out torque it's chevy coumterpart down low every time.

The wagon is not lite so torque is what you want.

Plus, you already have the mount brackets (301), transmission with the correct housing (TH350?), the wiring and fuel systems are routed the right way for a Pontiac to boot.

welcome to the forum... greal looking wagon you have

X2!

Keeping a Pontiac motor in it will be FAR less work than putting a Chevy motor in there... Not to mention the cool factor!

Keep it all Pontiac! I pulled the buick V6 in mine for a 400. It would be so easy with a 301 in there. That will save you a lot of work. You go to a chevy and it will actually be more work. The only thing that sucks about the Poncho is the exhaust. No reasonable cost for headers. They make them but they are pricey. The best option is factory reproduction Ram Air manifolds. Or stick with the stock log style ones. Like $600-700 for headers (I think) $400 for oversized 2.5 inch Ram air manifolds. The smaller 2 .25 inch ones are like $275

Thanks for the advice gentleman and I will stick with the 400 from the GP and also put the ralley II's on my Le mans wagon. Just a dumb question, is there a big difference in fuel mileage between the 350 pontiac & the 400? This wagon is my parts hauler and my sleeper street/strip car is a '69 Bel air 2-door sedan, thanks.

Depending on how heavy your foot is, I doubt you'll really see a huge difference in mileage between the two...
Maybe a couple miles per gallon at the most.

Are you sure there aren't any headers designed for other cars that might fit like a-bodies or b-bodies?
