Rebuilding a 350 to W31 specs sounds intriguing to me...
Then that's a easy plan to reproduce. Using todays cams, it will be stronger, yet smoother than the original.
The original had 10.25:1 compression, # 4 ('68 and '69)and #5('70) heads with 2.00in intake valves, factory aluminum intake(not as good as the performer RPM), 800 cfm Q-jet, And the stock W30 cam. They said it made 325hp @ 5500 rpm. That was B.S.
I drove a '69, 4 speed, W31. All i did was run 1st gear out to see where the engine fell off at. It pulled from about 1500 rpm to 7100 rpm when the power fell off. It got there quick. Felt like 450 hp to me.
I figure with head work, headers, A RPM intake, a cam like Crowler's 280HDP or Lunati's Street Master 10420313(A W31 replacement cam), and over 10:1 comp. You'll have modern W31. Use this as a base set up because you can get nastier, But you move away from being able to drive it around. A manual transmission is a must.

Yes. Nothing against the 307, it is a great motor for it was intended for, but just not any fun to drive.

Thanks. I am planning on installing a 5 or 6 speed some day anyway. Can't wait to see what kind of project that will be...

Supposedly the W31 put out 360 hp at 6600? rpm, Olds underated it. I believe this was with the awful capped manifolds with no accesories, standard gross rating. Olds knew anyone who took it to the track would put on headers. Why develop manifolds for such a limited application.

Insurance companies were coming down on them all. Olds did their best to cover up the W31 to '69. By '70 the oil companies were about to raise gas prices. So, GM knew the jig was up!! Damn it!!!

360 hp was the UNDER rating of the W30. I think that is more like what the W31 actually put out. GM knew what they were doing then. Olds was conservative. The restrictive exhaust covered up the fact that the W31 had a more radical lope than the W30. In the A-body, you can use BBO exhaust manifolds on a small block. That gave away the W31s power potential. Thats why a set of headers wakes these motors up so much in stock form.

So what kind of cost are we talking about OVERALL? (Heads, stock ported or aftermarket, intake, cam, flat top pistons, rods, valvetrain, possible crank, carb, bearings, and all the other misc stuff)

The only reason I say this is because I don't know exactly what is on this engine yet and what I can use and what I can't to get me where I want to be. I would like a ballpark figure of replacing basically all the internals to get an idea of where I stand cost wise.

400-450 ft lbs is what I am shooting for with comparable torque. Thanks.
