ok bought a good priced 74, 350 rocket was going to replace the 307 in my cutlass, what do i need to do now?

1. Buy it
2. Remove all accessories, brackets, etc from 307
3. Transfer above to 350
4. Bolt 307 motor mounts to 350 block
5. Install 350 in car
6. Drive

Plug and play. All the sensors and everything should be in the same place, so if you don't need to rebuild it, just drop it in and hook it up.

I have the same engine in my cutlass, but I'm still converting from v6 crap...

thanks for the information, i feel a lot more prepared, tho what are some things that would probably be good to do if the engine has been setting for a few years, other then the basic tuneup?

I think it depends if you have seen it run. You can't always trust people when they say it ran great when it was pulled. It may have been running pretty good, but has a rod knock  If you have not seen it run, the best thing would be to at least pull some of the bearing caps on the crank and inspect the bearings. If they have no major wear or scoring, you should be fine with leaving things alone. You can also do a cylinder leak down test to see what kind of condition the rings and heads are in. The good thing about this test is that you don't need to crank the engine over or have it running. If it passes that test, you will be good to go.

In my opinion, whether you have seen the engine run or not, you should at least replace the timing chain and oil pump w/ pick up. It is cheap and easy to replace while the engine is out of the car and some good extra insurance. After replacing the oil pump, it would be a good idea to prime the oil pump.

ah perfect thank you thats the kind of info im looking for, i have not heard the engine run personally but i bought it from an old farmer in a small nebraska town so i feel relatively safe with it running ok but i will definetly check that out, anything else.. anyone?

I may be wrong, but don't the 260 and 307 Olds engines use a different exhaust flange than the other Olds V8's? If so, you would have to use the 350's exhaust manifolds and not the ones off the 307. (Maybe I am thinking about the Pontiac 265/301 engines instead?)

If you are talking about the flange part that bolts to the head, they are all the same. I think the only difference could be the size of the exhaust ports. They will all bolt on, but some may flow like crap. I am not sure of the exact years that were different.
