my 81 has been giving me issues since i changed the motor back in July 2012. EVERYTHING in the car was original when i bought it. Had a few quirks for about a year that i worked out of it and than the motor went. Cam broke in 2. Anyway got a replacement to put back in but now the lock up solenoid wont work now and it will down shift when i let off the gas after about 15 or 20 minutes of driving. after that i have to shift to neutral, let it coast, and than put back in drive and it'll go back in 3rd but the solenoid wont kick in. ive done a fluid and filter change along with a new vacuum servo. nothing changed, readjusted the tv cable and nothing . Any idea's. it shifts fine when its cold but after it warms up is when it starts to shift funny. Also after the transmission warms up sometimes first gear wont shift out till 40 and im not standing on the gas. :blam:

any idea's will be greatly appreciated....

Well I can't help you with your transmission issue because I'm not familiar with them but I can tell you one thing though; they don't have TV cables!

  here ya go DoubleV. Anyone else wanna give me some insight on what to look for? Could it be the valve body or in the gears. When I changed the fluid and filter, the pan was clean, like it was done yesterday. But the fluid that was in there was easily 10+ years old.

been trying to google this issue and it pulls up nothing. I also found out that to have the transmission rebuilt or have the issue fixed will probably cost me around 700 bucks :puke: i hope its something simple that i can just do without sinking a sh*t ton into a probably $50 fix

I think you may have misunderstood what I meant. A 350 transmission ( or a 350C in your case since you said it has a lockup feature ) does not use a TV cable like you show above, it uses a vacuum modulator to control shifts instead. The cable on a 350 transmission is a kickdown cable.

The 2004r uses a TV cable.

So basically the question is did you say TV cable but meant to say kickdown cable or does your transmission really have a TV cable? If it does have a TV cable, then you don't have a 350 transmission!

Either way, you can get 350 transmission's built for very cheap. $700 is way too much.

ok sorry bout that, i was always told they were pretty much the same thing. they all connect to the carb or throttle body and than to a valve in the trans. so pretty much the lay out of the valve body in each trans with a tv cable or kickdown cable have different uses? I always noticed the same outcome with vehicles that have the cable and it shifts down when you open it up, ya know. I dunno, like i said this transmission problem is new stomping grounds for me.
the transmission i got in my car is a uni-bell and has 13 bolts on the pan. the vacuum modulator is on the passenger side, in the back, facing to the rear of the car. the tail shft housing is bolted on. all this is what told me that it was a 350c. my 83 regal had the same transmission. I looked for a tag or markings on the trans and cant find anything on it. theres a 2 wire plug on the drivers side and the filter is square. i can take some pics of it the best i can if i need too.

It sounds like you do have a 350C transmission then.

TV cables like on the 2004r are completely different from a kickdown cable like on a 350 transmission. TV cables control all shifts all the time. A kickdown cables only function is to tell the transmission to downshift when you put your foot into it.

350 transmission rebuilds are dirt cheap ( assuming you need to even go that route ) but you should shop around for the best price.

fair enough, yea i kinda figured i had a 350c because of the old regal i had having the same trans. My 85 and 84 cutlass had the 200 metric and my 86 has the 200r4. i just cant figure out why it shifts down when i let off the gas. I checked on pricing for a rebuild kit and they're only like 150 bucks but the labor rates are ridiculous. i dont think it needs rebuilt because it only has 107,000 on it, shifts great when its cold and has only been opened up for a filter job twice. Once by the lady that owned it before me and myself. other than that, that's the only records I have on it. Does anyone think it could have a peice of trash stuck in it some were? I put a bottle of lucas in when i changed the fluid and filter and it still does the same thing. No lock-up and 3rd shifts out when i let off the gas. i heard from a local mechanic that the govener could have something to do with it, but what the hell is a govener and weres that located at and what will i have to look for when i find it?

Check the governor. Had that happen on a trip to Pittsburgh, kept downshifting. Shop there said a bit of clutch facing had flaked off and was keeping the governor from allowing the trans to upshift properly. He cleaned it out and changed the filter for like $50. He also said cars that sit still for a long time tend to suffer this condition. Also last time I had a T-350 built I asked how much-the guy said, there's 2 kinds of rebuilds, the $200 kind and the $800 kind. I said I wanted it to last 150,000 miles again. He said that would be the $800 kind. This is a governor and it has a spring clip holding the cover on. The weights fly out and pull on the shaft, opening/closing ports in the valve body.
