There have been a bunch of nice 3rd gens come up for sale for reasonable prices close by with apparently little rust and good paint. There is a 83 with the L69 option supposedly. Did all the L69 come with the dual snorkel air cleaner? He says it doesn't have one and wasn't sure it was supposed to have one. Other than the Monte SS, did any L69 come with a regular air cleaner? I also assumed it had the TH350C, he says OD. Were they all 700R4? He has to take a look, he isn't sure which OD it is. Thanks.
Ok, I got curious and looked at something... but saw this:
"in April 1983 an all-new 5.0 L L69 4 bbl 190 hp (142 kW) High-Output (HO) V8 was introduced. This engine was only available with a manual transmission in 1983. Due to its late introduction, 3,223 L69 V8s were sold for the 1983 model year. "
I don't believe so. Most folks ended up adapting the Ford 5.0 HO air cleaner or modifying the factory one with a second snorkel - if I remember correctly.
It is just so many nice looking 3rd gen cars for reasonable that don't need paint to look decent. My 88 is rotten and requires way too many hours of bodywork. The only tempting G body is a 78 Malibu, which are OK but unless it saw no winters it will have frame rot. I would like a Grand Am way over a Malibu plus it has a rust hoarder top. Also I can insure anything 87 or older for $131 a year compared to nearly $100 a month for my 88. Of course it would get the 88 Olds 350 V8. I would get an adapter, use the 2350 stall I have and the 3.42 gears from the 88. I have a Corvette servo that was supposed to go in the Z71. I also have a modified governor with a 4600 1-2 shift. I would just get some bigger boost valves. This isn't set in stone as I am putting out a grand to get gas service to my shop for better heat. He told me it didn't have a dual snorkel and didn't think it would have had one, still murky on this. So I went to this board, I assumed the 700R4 was the trans of choice for OD but I thought the TH350C was an option the first few years. Thanks
I have only one comment for Third Gens - they suck *ss to work on. There is nothing convenient about them. They have all of the space issues of a 4th gen, but with mostly stock 305's. If I have to cram myself under a dash or work in an enclosed space, then it will be for a Vette or something similar. Lastly, I think you'd look bad with a mullet
I got a deal on an 88 Formula 350. 5.7 TPI, 3.27 Aussie 9-bolt tear. Rebuilt the headlight doors using cuts of glue sticks to replace the 6-year old plastic shock isolator mechanisms.
And I whacked my head on the A pillar about every other time I climbed down into it. Feel free to do that to yourself, but...
