all i know is its a 400 out of a 72 trans am

Be careful. If is a early block 400, they used different mounts and don't have the holes for later mounts. Decode the block and see exactly what you have. transamcountry.com has good info about the pontiac engine.

I had a 1970 GTO 400 in my 81' Malibu wagon and it hauled *ss. I used 301 mounts and perches, had to drill new frame holes for them, but it fit perfectly like it belonged there. A 72' block has 5 mounting holes per side so it will bolt right in to the 301 mounts. A 72' is low compression and no EGR. An HEI will swap right in. Stock exhaust manifolds will fit our frames easily. Post the 2 letter engine code and let's see what it is. It is located on the front of the block just below the pass side head. Also verify it's a 72' either by date code or it should be cast in by the distributor hole. 400 should be cast into the side of the block near the freeze plugs. Even a low performance station wagon 400 motor will propel your car like rocketship.

been there and done that with one of the many cutlass i've had the one i had was a 74 pontiac 400 that went into a 82 cutlass first of all i had to change the motor mounts swap in 400 turbo transmission and had to swap in a different air cleaner the one i used was from a 231 v6 buick may sound weird but it worked ! hopefully this info helps

It would be easier to set an Olds 350 back down on the 260 mounts and be done with it. Don't get me wrong, I'm Pontiac biased but an Olds for an Olds swap doesn't get any easier.

I agree with G-Body_Vet. But for the sake of argument, what is this going into? I personally like to see division engines in their respective division cars. Call me VERY old school.

ok i found an olds 455/th400 trans in a truck that runs. i was wanting to stick with a th350 but wut would it take for me to make this work? if i get some good info i will purchase it this week 😀

The TH350 will bolt up to the 455. If you plan on thrashing the car the trans won't live long behind that much torque though.

do i have to change the mounts and crossmember to swap out my 260/th350 combo for the 455/th400 package?
