$1,000, whats wrong with it? I have seen 455 oldsmobiles sold as cores for close to that, although that is high.
Those people must have been high...
Olds 455 cores go for $300 to $500 all day long, maybe if it had an extremely rare forged steel crank that only came in Toros and 98's with a tow package and were produced from late December of 1967 through early February of 1968 then I can see $1000, I saw one go for that much on eBay but regular J headed 455's are cheap, earlier C, E and G headed cores may go for a little more.
I've picked up a few running 455's for $300 to $375...
An Olds motor is the way to go for some true power and it would be awesome to see someone actually stuff one in a Chevy but usually when someone has thrown a HP figure at you they are full of sh*t and trying to just off load it to some kid unless they have the dyno results to back it up.
500hp is possible and not highly unlikely and very achievable in an Olds 455 but sounds to me like the guy is looking to off load it to some sucker because it's ready to take a crap or it's been beaten to hell... careful.
Only a fool would replace a 500hp, 550 ft-lb Oldsmobile motor for some Chevy small block, listen to what dogshit said... all that horse power aint sh*t if it can't be backed by torque. Take a physics class... I don't care if it has 600hp ON PAPER, if it only has 400ft-lbs of torque forget it, better hope you have a light car and the right gearing.
I woundn't ever buy a used motor for that much money, I don't care if it has receipts... how was it treated?
To me any used motor running or not is a CORE, bar none, regardless of what was done to it. Be careful...
Caveit Emptor...
Do you have the specs on the motor?
Cam, pistons, rods used?
Head work? Valve sizes?
Mondello is just a name, unless it was built by Joe himself from the Tenessee shop it's a crap job built by Lynn in California, that guy has soiled Joes name (god rest his soul) and has done some shitty buisness...
Good luck!
