Installing a 4l60e transmission in my 1981 Malibu. Will truck deep transmission pan hang to low?

Theres no need, stick with a standard depth pan... just incase you decide to lower the car later on.

So you're putting in a 4L60E in a car i presume that really doesnt have much of a computer if at all to run anything more than a feedback carburetor, what are you using as a seperate controller?

FWIW....I have the Hughes cast aluminum DEEP PAN on my 4L60 trans, aka 1993 700R4 (last year before "E" models which were the same/similar pan afaik) and it doesn't really hang any lower than my header collectors, and never had an issue with scraping anything under car. Unless you're really lowering your ride height significantly, G Bodies don't tend to have issues with scraping imho.

I don't know if the pan you're referring to is any deeper than this, but this one adds additional 2 quarts to the capacity and notice it doesn't change the height of the filter pickup, it sits on the four little pedestals inside the pan. The extra fluid just helps to have additional fluid available to keep temps a little cooler is all I think it's for.

The factory "deep" truck pan isn't as deep as aftermarket units but is worth it since it adds 1 quart capacity for ~$35. Further, most of the stock units didn't have drain plugs and many of the others got the wrong Loc-Tite on the drain plug at the factory: they're glued in for good and people have twisted the pans in pieces trying to to remove them. My '04 truck had a deep pan with no plug. You'll definitely want to buy a new pan with a drain plug.

I picked up one of these from Amazon last year and am happy with it. I use different gaskets though, and the Lube Locker brand pictured above is pretty darn good.

As for ground clearance I'm in the same boat as 383StealthRam- my extra 2 qt pan on the th350 in the Cutlass isn't any lower than my full length header collectors. So you're not limited to using the truck pan due to clearance but it's super easy on the wallet.

just a little off the subject. that "force" crossmember you have in the pic. does it engage the all of the 4 bolt holes in the frame? I used one in mt '84 El Camino(g body) it only engages the rear two holes on the frame rails. i'v been driving like this for a year or more with just the two mounts. seems to be OK. pls let me know if yours fits like mine. thanks

I assume you're asking me?

The G-Force cross member I'm using is for GBody with TH700R4 trans application. I believe it might be the same one as their TH350, but I think the TH2004R one might be different. You'll have to check with them or Summit/Jegs for applications.

Not entirely sure on the mounting holes, mines an 87 Cutlass which bolted right up to a second set of holes on the driver's side frame rail behind the two holes that the original one did (w/ 2004R).

I think I've read online somewhere that earlier G frames didn't always have the second set of frame rail holes and their is an extension piece that can be welded in? Someone else might know better?

I do know that a buddy has 84 Cutlass and he has same G-Force I have with 700R4 and it bolted right in.

One other thing I'll mention is that 700R4 has trans mount bosses on both the main trans case, and also on the bolt on extension/tail shaft housing. I used the main case mount when I ran the stock 2004R cross member that was modified for 2.5" dual exhaust. I had to switch to the extension housing mount with 700R4 as GF cross member with 3" exhaust.

HTH

some require an extension,my 200r4 required it compared to the th350.
In looking at the G Force web site, it seems like the cutoff might be 1983 and older, need the extension for some of their x-members to work on G Body. They note 1984 exception for El Camino.
