I've had 3-4 gbody 7.5s crap out behind basically stock engines. Also had 2-3 Hbody ones go on me too. But these were all stock untouched rears that took some abuse.I'm currently running a rebuilt 7.5 (drum to drum) and haven't had any problems yet. But it hasn't got many miles, and hasn't really had a chance to take any abuse from my new 355. I will have to wait and see what happens. Basically the way I see it, if you're running street tires you SHOULD be OK. But slicks and a little power could break it pretty quick.
Mine is Original to the car. I change the fluid, inspect the axles and add the clutch additive every year.
Has survived My RT foot for thirty years.
Does Not see the track any more but it still gets a good burnout now and then.
You probably know that torque, especially from a standstill seems to be a killer. A manual transmission shocks the rear more than an auto, and as mentioned already, slicks make it worse.
That being said, my Regal is putting down over 400 ft lbs, and I've got new Mickey Thompson DRs. It has a stock 7.5 with 26 splines - only mod is a girdle.
I've got a locked 7.5 but i dont really beat on it.
The way I see it is they put 7.5-7.65 rears in most g bodies and all iroc and hrs cars which are notorious but getn beat on. So unless your at the track every weekend you will probably be fine. Just my thoughts.
Even if you do blow it up 7.5s are everywhere and cheaper than dirt.
I put a locker in mine from a junk yard 84 trans am for 35$. All depends on your $ flow, how you drive, and what type of mods if any you wish to do to it... More mods I would say go with larger ring.
