I'm planning on putting a 700r4 in place of my 200r in my Monte. I know I'll need a shifter but do I need a new crossmember and driveshaft too?

Yes. Why replace the 200r4 w/the 700r4? They're both 4spd OD transmissions. I think the 200r4 has a better final drive gear ratio, if I remember correctly. From my personal experience the 700r4 is weaker and more problematic than the 200r4.

Like I said before people are afraid of things they don't understand. 700 = heavy er duty, As in cruising, or every cop car or truck built after 1989.
200 = 1/8 or 1/4 quick.get there and **** durability.Just throw money at it.

Dude get a clue , I am taking a stand here, If 200 4r was such an awesome trans why didn't GM put it in 400,000 trucks , Cop cars. motor homes ,Corvettes, Z28 Camaros, Firebirds Trans AM's, Formulas..
They put 2004r's in 105 to 145 horse power V6 Buick's, Cadillacs and Olds rear drive cars..
I think you said you drive Caprice,or Impala , Why dont you take the7004R ,or the4l60E out of your own ride and install a sh*t box 2004r in your own car. :?:

I've known way more 700r4s to break than 200r4s. I broke the 700r4 in my '85 with a SBC 350. The 700r4s are for cruisers, cause they can't handle power for long. Now you can get anything built with enough money, but I'd take a 200r4 over 700r4 anyday. The 200r4 came in the GNs, not the 700r4. I'm just sayin'.

There are plenty of postings out there to tell the tale on this one, but bottom line: Pick the transmission that is easiest to swap. The 700 is not stronger. It was used in the trucks because it is mirrored off the 350 turbo, which the trucks used before. The 2004R held up to a lot of factory HP, and can be built to hold whatever you want to throw at it. Because the 700 was used in more factory applications, it is typically cheaper to build because more people are familiar with it. Neither one was more heavy duty than the other. To cut drive shaft or not to cut drive shaft? That is the question!!!

Most people will tell you that stock, the 700 is the better unit. Heavily modified is a different matter. You won't find any 9 second GNs with the stock 200-4R. Not even many 11-second ones, for that matter.

A 700 requires a little work to get into a MC; crossmember, shorter drive shaft.

The 700 has a MUCH deeper 1st gear, but 2nd and 4th are similar. 3rd of course is 1:1 in both.

I don't see either one as a "clear winner".

I swaped transmission's too you can use the same crossmeber but have to drill out new holes in frame bcuz 700r4 is longer also you have toshortened driveshaft i had my shortened rebalanced and new u joints put in for 100 bucks ! 700r4 has a lower 1st gear thats why i went with it i had mine built up to handle at least 400hp ! :bump:

Well thanks for the disagreement :lol: . The only real reason I want to swap in a 700r is because I can get one with the motor I plan on getting anyway from a cop car with the trans cooler

its a good transmission i luv my 700r4! your always gonna have people telling this and that but 700r4 is a more popular trans its cheaper to beef up too than the 2004r !

The only reason a 2004r came in the grand national was they did not have a case for a 700 that would fit the Buick engine.
( also the 200 gear ratio worked well with the torque band of the turbo 6) It was cheaper than retooling a line of 700 trans cases for other brands,then Chevy. It was all about money not any thing else. Hydramatic rates their trannies based on the torque they will take. the larger the number the heaver duty the unit,It's just that simple. :roll:
