700r4 install?

Don't forget that the pump in the 700 was redesigned in 88 to add durability, before then the pumps were known to self destruct.
I am pro 200 due to the simple fact you don't need to "modify" parts like the driveshaft, just swap from the donor and you are good to go.

I've had both and liked both. If I was going to have to modify the crossmember and drive shaft already and was running a chevy engine, then I'd go with a 700 (yes, I know the 200 is dual pattern). But, if the 200 is already setup, then by all means run it...

I'm planning on putting a 700r4 in place of my 200r in my Monte. I know I'll need a shifter but do I need a new crossmember and driveshaft too?

Both are 4 speed trans so your shifter will be the same. The shifter cable bracket that bolts to the trans may need to be modified, a little work will need to be done on the crossmember, and cut the driveshaft.
When I looked at replacing my trans they were both appx the same $$ to rebuild to the same power level so I stuck with the 200r for it's ease of installation ( cutting the driveshaft was going to run $150 alone ).
But... If I could have found a 700r that was already built instead of dropping over $1k on rebuilding my 200r I would have swapped in a heartbeat.
