You can also run paddle shifter setup with the 4L60E. I already have a 4L60E in my Fleetwood all I would have to purchase is the control box then my TPI 350 Monte SS is paddle shifting through gears...

say no to pro touring restomods! It's already an auto slushbox, fight the paddle shift urge!

My car is far from Pro-touring. I am looking at things from a "I like it, so I may do it" point of view. I like technology. I don't like car payments though...

See this conversation might have saved your life, you coulda been one of 'them'.

are you sure that there IS a 4l60? the 4l60e is actually a 700-r4 with a computer to control everything instead of a TV cable.
regardless a properly built 4l60e is a great trans. the ability to run multiple programs (and paddle shift if so desired) means it's a true all purpose trans. and they are very strong--again, when built right. the originals had problems but the newest ones (5l65e i think--yes 5 fwd gears and more torque than the 4l60) are pretty damn goo. of course the ultimate is the 6l95e (based off the 4l80e/th400) 6spds and takes MASSIVE torque!
my close 2nd is the 200-4r. F%^K the 700 j/k lol!

Ok buddy, believe what you want if it makes you sleep well at night. Don't let the post count fool you...I am far from a Noob when it comes to building G bodys. I have owned 5 since 2002. Starting with a 79 Monte, 84 Pontiac Grand Prix, 83 Olds Cutlass Supreme Brougham, 84 Monte Carlo SS and 86 Monte Carlo SS T Top. That doesnt include the D body and Square Body trucks Ive built. I am also a 10 year vehicle maintenance craftsman with a background in paint and body, welding and fabrication, and general purpose maintenance....You did not change my mind. You simply told yourself, you changed my mind. I really don't classify my cars as one strict genera. They have elements from all kinds of styles and builds.

As far as the 4L60 and 4L60E topic. The "E" designates it as an electronically controled transmission. The 4L60 was the name GM switched to in the early 90's or so from 700R4. Why they did this, I have no Idea. They are both operated by TV cable. They both have the same gear ratios they have similiar internals but the 4L60 has slightly beefier internals than the early 700R4's. The "E"just took it a step further and eliminated the TV cable and it runs off of a TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) and computer.

wow

The 700R4/4L60/4L60E is just an evolutionary thing. Ford did the same thing with the AOD/AOD-E/4R70W. They are the same basic designed that was just improved and refined over the production run. That's why, for example, a '92 700R4 would be preferred over an '82 700R4. The '92 would have 10 years worth of improvements from millions and millions of test miles, failures and owner complaints -- Not to mention manufacturing and materials improvements. Just thought I'd mention that FWIW.

Ad just to put it out there, there is two distinct forms of the 700r4. The earlier version has a 27 spline input shaft and the later has a 30spline. The 30 spline would be the more favorable one.
