hey guys I had this '71 Buick 355 built/swapped about a 2 years ago and its got a ta cam and other internals, block decked for better compression, new 4bbl qjet and a true 2.5 dual exhausts (no x-pipe) with flowmaster 40s.....cool at first, now its just a headache, especially long highway trips 🙂 and my neighbors hate me, which isn't such a bad thing.

what muffler can I use to quiet this thing down quite a bit? add x-pipe as well?

thanks for input!

Main problem is the Flowmasters. Buy some regular, cheap chambered mufflers and add an X-pipe.

yea I wanted that nastiness in the beginning so I went straight pipe to 40s, coming up from the old tired v6 wasn't too clear on what I was getting into 🙂

Nice to see another Buick powered Buick! My exhaust is literally just the 2.5 inch TA downpipes on either side. That's it. It's loud, but on the highway when I roll my windows up I can barely hear it. Only been pulled over twice... int he same day... 😛 But yeah I'd go with SLP mufflers if you still want the sound but not the loudness and ditto on the X pipe. I had 2.25 true duals (with H pipe) on my 1970 Thunderbird with flowmaster 50s and it sounded great so I'm partial to that setup myself.

Also welcome to the site!

I have the 2.5 down pipes/pipes as well...im going to add that x-pipe and shop around on those mufflers, slps are pricey! old schooler buick gs guy said to go with magna flow turbos, 75$ each.

you got ac in that regal with a sbb? im trying to clear that hurdle currently, got about 5 millimeters between pass valve cover and cracked air box.....I have been told this is a cooling issue and that vintage air system starts around 3000$

No, I do not. System was out of R12 and I am gonna change it over at some point anyway. What I have seen people do, is take the ac box and bust it up and then fiberglass it back in to make it concave to have access to all the vc bolts and not have the engine hitting. I plan on doing that next spring when I take the engine back out for inspection. and yeah, the Turbos are a decent muffler for the price and will quiet it down a lot.

that's what i'm going to do, find me a fiberglass guy, thanks!

Any regular super turbo muffler should fit the bill, like a dynomax. You don't necessarily need to spend the money on stainless Magnaflows. X pipe will raise the pitch of the exhaust.
