i have a 78 cutlass supreme it is stock with 260 5 speed manuel, and posi. ive just restored it and not sure what trans and what rearend. any insight would be helpful.
I've never actually seen a five-speed '78 but I'm the former owner of a four-speed '79.
Your transmission is a T-5. It's similar to the units found in F-bodies except that yours mounts straight-up.
Your rear axle is a 7.5" No idea about the ratio, but having Posi is a nice touch. Be nice to it, The 7.5" isn't very strong. (And the T-5 is pretty brittle too...)
Rare car, take good care of it!

If you have a stock 260 w/5 speed you havea gold mine..since they never made them...

Yes, they did make the car. According to my Standard of American Cars book that the 5 speed option was only available with the 260 engine. A 3 or 4 speed manual transmission was also available. If one ordered the 305 option, you only could get the 4 speed with it. If my memeory serves me right, I believe your 5 speed was the same transmission used in the Vega/Monza cars. Instead of the typical shift H-pattern, reverse is where 1st is. The 5 speeds are not torque friendly. Your car should have 2.93:1 ratio in the rear.
You do indeed have a rare car.

malibu80 is right 100%. I know because the clutch/pedals/linkage/bellhousing and interior bits in my car came from a '79 260 5-spd. All of those parts were identical between the 3/4/5 speed cars.

my mom ordered it with the 260 5-speed in late 77 and that is correct
r 2 4
1 3 5 is the gear patteren. reason for the ?, im putting it it the carl casper auto show here in louisville and want my display board to be correct. thanks for the help so it is a borg warner t-5 ???

Yes, the transmission is a Borg Warner unit. The transmission should use Dextron fluid. This 5 speed was offered on the V8 Monza's for one year only. GM found that the 5 speeds did not last behind the V8's.

It's not a T-5. The T-5 was not used in a production car until 1982 or 83 when American Motors used it in the Spirit, Concord, Eagle and Jeep CJ (It is variant # 1 in the part number). Plus, a T-5 has a normal shift pattern with reverse below 5th. What it is I don't know, I just know it is not a variant of the T-5.

Wow you just said the magic word...

Monza

My first car was a 79 monza Spyder. Factory 305/TH350 car. Silver with red interior. Damn I really miss that thing. 😢
