78 cutlass manuel transmission ???????

Back when I first moved to DC, somewhere around 1987 or 1988, I took a ride around the DC beltway to go look at and test drive an all-original 1978 Cutlass 2-door with the 260/5-speed. Car was tan with a tan interior and looked like a classic granny grocery getter. I remember the car driving very well and I also remember it being very under powered. Don't recall why I passed on it, but if I had that opportunity again...

Between the 260 and the GM rear gearing, it wasn't meant to set the world on fire.

I checked the GM Oldsmobile Parts Catalog. It says for GBody purposes, the 260 was avail with two 3 spd autos and the 5 spd manual in 78 and 79. In 80 only the two 3 spd autos. If someone had a 4 spd it was either a 231 or 305.

This is why I like this place. Never knew there was ever a stock 5-speed gbody. One more useless piece of information in my head about cars. Now I just need Hollywood to come out with a gameshow for gearheads. Maybe "Four Wheels of Fortune" or "Car Sharks"..

lol x2

A friend of mine had a 5 speed Cutlass in the 90's. I've had so many people tell me the car does not exist, I was starting to believe them. We even had a guy at a dealership tell us the car did not exist back then when we were looking for linkage parts (even with it in the parking lot). Glad to know I am not crazy.

I know it's a little off topic but did they ever make a GN with a manual? It just popped in my head.

Stick in a G-Body

By '81, there weren't any four or five speeds offered.

I ordered my '79 new with the 305-4V and the five speed, it came back rejected, and ended up settling for the four gear.

Has anyone EVER seen a G-Body with a stick and a center console? That was also deleted from my order. Any I've seen, including the two I've owned, whether four or five speed, have just that big, ugly, plastic moulding around the shifter boot and nothing between the buckets.

I'm gonna see if I can modify the console out of an '85 4-4-2 parts car to work.

Yeah, there was a console you could get, it was only the part with the lid, and didn't have the section in front. Nothing wrapping around the shifter if thats what you're getting at. There's at least one floating around the photo album....

You couldn't get it with the 5-spd, since the shifter sat so far back on the tunnel....

I don't think there were ANY Buick G-bodies with manuals, ever. The Turbo Coupe was strictly a 200H, as were the GNs, T-Types, etc.

There are Malibus, Monte Carlos, LeManses, and Grand Prixs with sticks, but I've never, ever, seen a Buick with one.
