Yes I'm familiar and went down that road in fact if you look back from the beginning of the thread to now the car has only been driven maybe 5 miles and if I listed everything I changed and checked you probably wouldn't believe me. 3 miles on this engine approximately and it has new cam and lifters pushrods adjustable valvetrain oil pump fresh crank and bearings new distributor and custom carbs built the carb I'm thinking it's the carb because I at one point had the same problem with the last fresh motor. I don't think I corrected the problem then ether that motor just ate itself apart when the oil pump failed while trying to make it run good. The only thing that is the same is the carburetor.
I would definitely be trying a different carb if I had that option in this scenario.

That last post was supposed to be a lot bigger LoL
Back to the attic
I dug up a Holley spreadbore I bought Manny years ago that looks like it had been dropped...or thrown? And it is one that fits my application.

But like I said it took a hit or 2

Sometime after buying that one I found this one for free
16856569148082461528669055863525.jpg

It has that all too common over tightened issue.
16856570508053775835053056993312.jpg

And if course the obvious parting out problem but it was free so it's parts. Now Bach to carb 1 I didn't think I could get the broken shaft for the rear pump out so I went looking for another base plate. Instead I bought this off market place for $50 and picked it up in the bowling alley parking lot around the corner from my house on my way home from work last night.

So from this pile of crap I'm going to make a Holley spreadbore 650 and put it together with non-stick gaskets.

2 of them even have the correct choke set-up. So sitting here writing this I'm deciding what I'm going to do as I go by way of what do I have.
Well the only carb studs I have are to long so with a little more digging I found that purple spread bore carb spacer that came with the free 350 from my brother. I don't have the correct linkage brackets to use on a Holley but with what I have I can bolt it down hook up a fuel line and see if the carb I bought last night works at all as is???? Yeah I think that's what I'm going to do. I mean it can't hurt anything it already runs badly. So now that I've eaten some dinner I think it's time to try a origen unknown Holley 650 spread bore. I don't have high hopes I don't expect it to run at all it's more of a mock up to see what I'll need after a rebuild.

FYI from when I rebuilt/refreshed my 4175 0-9895 I had to get both the Holley & Quick Fuel kits to get everything I needed to do it properly.

Clutch, I think you might be adding extra work for an uncertain outcome. Maybe save the squarebore stuff for after you've verified it's actually a carb problem you're dealing with.

How is the carb on the Squarebody Crew? Any carbs you might be able to borrow from your brother? You need a known good carb right now, even if it's just temporary for testing.

Those Holleys are all spread bore they are actually what Holley offered as a direct replacement for a q-jets. I really wanted a known good carb to try but I don't have anything available. The only thing my brother has is out of my reach. W-30 numbers restored never had gas in it that kind of stuff plus he's not big on loaning anything to anyone unless there's something in it for him. Perhaps I should be that way maybe I'd have a running car? The square body carb needs a rebuild and got parked with gas in it so... Not exactly known good I've several unknown carbs off but I don't want to try 30 dirty old carbs that probably won't work anyway. I chose the spread bore Holley because I always found Holleys easy to rebuild and if it does work I'll use it if not I'll put the q-jet back on and sell those spread bore Holleys to someone else all 3 of them. If I could buy an off the shelf carb for this application I probably would have by now but here I am picking at a problem without an answer

Man, sorry I made you type all that. I saw and knew they were spreadbores and typed squarebore for some reason. I get your reasoning, but was hoping there was a known good option. I guess rebuilding what you have makes sense. I've always been partial to Holleys too.

Carry on.

I just think there not as complex and if there not leaking they usually work. If I wasn't typing to you guys I'd just be talking to myself lol I'm in to much pain to do anymore tonight my wife went upstairs and Lauren is working on making her own prom dress.
If the carburetor makes no difference I'll try a different distributor again then I'm going to start leak down testing cylinders and checking valve springs. Maybe I'll change the valve springs idk pull the motor again at this rate. I've literally never had this much trouble with a car I put together in my life eve. I will figure it out.
