Anyone have any luck changing the stock bumpers to steel? are there trim pieces of a Elko or Malibu that will look decent?

You might be able to do it on the back with a Malibu bumper, but the elaborate shape of the front one would be tough without custom work. Are the moldings the problem or do you just prefer steel bumpers? There are aftermarket moldings that will work, even though they are not technically correct.

Years back I had seen a 79 Monte Carlo with a 72 Monte Carlo front bumper modified to fit. Looked OK but needed fillers to complete the look.

yeah the moldings are in pretty rough shape and missing but also I do prefer the steel bumpers like on the Malibu.. just not sure which route I want to go in yet.. I'm not a big fabricator so changing the length or width of a bumper might be out of my reach

did you build your own fillers?

Was not on my car, was on a 79 Monte Carlo I competed against at a local track. I've heard of people using Buick Regal tail lights on the 3rd gen Monte Carlo's, I cant say the bumpers and filler panels would work with the body style.

I thought about doing that a few times to my 79. I was thinking about using a Malibu bumper and maybe the front header pannel. It would not be an easy modification though. You probably would have to make your own bumper fillers. Nicer Monte Carlo bumpers are not that hard to find like the turn signals. I also used the aftermarket crome moldings on my 80 Turbo. They are ok, but lacking in a few details. To my knowledge that is the only option available now.
