My father has a friend that has a rear end but when i search the vin it does not come up. He believes the car is a 81 or 82 oldsmobile. The vin number is 1g3gr11y9jpjp327181. That is the vin code he gave me. If anyone could give me information on the vin number or what the stock rear end was that came out of that car would be greatly appreciated.

Your vin is not written correctly, however, you will not find the info you're looking for by the vin. There's two ways you can go about this with out taking it apart. One was mentioned by 88hurstolds. The other, locate the stamp that's on the front side of the passenger axle tube. Take the correct vin number (to verify year), and the digits stamped on the tube to your local gm dealer, they should be able to tell you what you need to know. Or post the numbers here and I'll look it up, lol.

The VIN that you've copied down has 18 characters in it, and a correct GM VIN should have 17 characters in it. Double check the VIN that you have, and make sure that you copied it down accurately.

well it deffinately is a 1982 cutlass supreme. Does anyone know what stock gear came out of those? Also if anyone knew if it was a posi or not would be great. We just assume take the whole rear end out and completely replace it on my car.

I think there was more than one gear ratio available depending on engine and transmission combos. These cars didnt get performance rear end gear ratios unless they were GN's, T-Types, 442's, or MCSS. Your best bet like mentioned before is to just jack the car up and see how many turns of the drive shaft it takes to spin the wheels once. A posi rear end can be identified by a little tag on one of the diff cover bolts that says something like "LSD oil only"

Here is a pic of the 8.5 inch 3.73 posi in my 442. See the little tag on the top diff cover bolt?

So, my next question is. If we were looking around a junk yard or browsing around. What car would you suggest we should grab a rear end out of? My dad has a 84 buick t type and i know those are good rear ends. But, they are also hard to find. I'm really looking for something i can directly bolt in to my car and have good acceleration. But, also something with good gas mileage because i'm running a built th350 with a B&M shift kit.

If all you want to change is the rear axle, then you're not going to get something with good acceleration and good fuel economy in one package. If you want an axle that will give you good acceleration, then as I said before, you're probably going to have to install an overdrive transmission to get decent fuel economy. Look at the performance G bodies from 1985 on up-they had rear axles with gearing for good acceleration, AND overdrive transmissions.
As for looking through a scrap yard for a desirable rear axle, look for a Monte SS, Olds 442, or Buick T type or GN. Just keep in mind that the axles from the 442s and GNs are going to be extremely hard to find, and very expensive. Also, keep in mind that GM changed the wheel studs on the A/G body cars from SAE threads to metric threads starting in 1982, so you'll end up having to use different wheel nuts on the front and rear of the car. Good luck.

Thanks, we have found a rear end. But, it has spools inside. What is everybody's opinion on running spools on a street car? positives? negatives?

A spool has it's purpose but it isn't for the street. I did it in my truck (it was a borrowed 9" third member I used while waiting for parts to repair my broken one) for about a week. It was miserable. It was hard to steer and wanted to come around if I went through a wet corner. I'd keep looking if I were you.
