8.5 into 7.5 housing???

hey so I found a guy on Craigslist advertising a G body rear axle out of a 85 Monte SS and says he had a transmission shop install a 8.5 3.73 posi carrier in it. Im skeptical cause i know how much real G body 8.5 rears go for and his asking price is well below that figure. Is this possible?

No, in short. A 8.5 gear set can not fit in a 7.5 or 7.625 housing. Just not possible.

As CrotchSS says, the 8.5 parts will not fit within the 7.5" housing. Is there a possibility that there's a misunderstanding in the wording of the ad?

I think he means an 8.5 rear end was installed in the car with a posi 3.73 but the easiest way to find out is to contact the seller

I'm thinking he meant 7.5 since it is a stock Monte rear. If it has been rebuilt with a new carrier it is still a good deal.

I called him and he says it's an 8.5 rear but he sounded confused so if I were you I'd text him and ask for pictures if he isn't local to you

If by a slim chance it really is an 8.5 JUMP ON IT. I text him for pics tho. I might even drive to Seattle for this one lol.
